Jake Arrieta (9-5, 2.80/1.05/2.71) vs. Jose Quintana (4-8, 3.69/1.30/3.31)
The Cubs turn to Jake Arrieta in the series finale against the White Sox. The Cubs are looking to snap their three-game slide and head into the All-Star break with a win under their belt. Regardless of the result this afternoon, the Cubs have had a good first half of the season.
It will not get any easier for the offense today with Jose Quintana on the hill. As reported before the series started, the Cubs caught the Sox at the wrong time and will look to slow their roll today. And don’t be surprised if Jeff Samardzija makes his return to the Wrigley mound in a relief role today.
The Cubs and White Sox will honor Ernie Banks and Minnie Minoso today. The entire Cubs team will wear No. 14 throwback uniforms from 1958. Banks was an All-Star that season on his way to earning the National League MVP award. The Sox will honor ‘Mr. White Sox’ by wearing throwback uniforms today from the same era. The Cubs and Sox will pay tribute to both icons in August when the two teams meet again on the South Side at The Cell.
Taylor Teagarden will be behind the plate this afternoon in the starting lineup. The Cubs may have to activate David Ross from the 7-day DL earlier than planned depending on the results of the MRI that Miguel Montero had on his left thumb. Reports suggested Montero could be looking at a stint on the DL if it turns out Montero did more than jam his left thumb in the first inning of Saturday’s game.
The SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game is this afternoon, weather permitting, in Cincinnati. Kyle Schwarber is in the starting lineup for the U.S. Team and Carl Edwards Jr. is scheduled to pitch out of Ken Griffey Sr.’s bullpen. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm CDT. MLB Network and MLB.TV have the moving pictures. Mike Ferrin and Jim Duquette will call the action on MLB Network Radio (SiriusXM Radio).
It’s the last game before a much-needed break for the Cubs and it all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta has put together four excellent starts in a row and he will look to become the first Cubs starting pitcher since Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster in 2008 to post 10 wins before the break. Arrieta kept the Cardinals at bay in his last outing for 6 2/3 innings. Arrieta allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Over his last two starts, Arrieta is 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. Arrieta is making his ninth start of the season at Wrigley where he is 3-4 in eight starts this season with a 3.27 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.
Today is Arrieta’s fifth career start against the South Side. Arrieta is 1-1 in four starts versus the Sox with a 5.49 ERA and 1.78 WHIP. In his only start against the Sox, Arrieta had one of his worst outings of the season a year ago at The Cell. Arrieta lasted just four innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout.
