Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 3.44/1.11/3.23) vs. Mike Leake (7-5, 3.95/1.23/4.10)
Let’s Play Two … The Cubs and Reds have a day-night doubleheader on tap today after playing 13 innings on Tuesday night. Kyle Hendricks takes the ball in game one and will face Mike Leake. Game two (5:10pm CDT) is the makeup of the game that was postponed on April 25. The Cubs have called up Dallas Beeler to make the start against lefty Tony Cingrani.
The Cubs bullpen is taxed. Joe Maddon said after Tuesday’s extra innings victory it is not as bad as it seems. With Hector Rondon and Jason Motte each tossing two innings, both relievers will likely be unavailable today. And with Travis Wood pitching in back-to-back games he is probably down for today as well. Maddon will have to lean on his starters and use Pedro Strop, James Russell, Rafael Soriano, Neil Ramirez and Justin Grimm wisely.
Mike Leake made his debut against the Cubs on April 11, 2010 and could be making his last appearance with the Reds today. Leake has had a lot of success against the Cubs over the last five years. Maddon has loaded his lineup with lefties due to Leake’s success against right-handed hitters.
The Cubs have split the first two games of the series, leaving the Queen City with three wins under their belt is a must and will make for a happy flight to Chicago.
Today all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
The excellent run that Kyle Hendricks finished the first half on came to an end his last time out against the Braves. Hendricks had a good outing but seemed to have trouble getting on the same page with Kyle Schwarber. The Braves snapped Hendricks’ scoreless innings streak and eventually beat the Cubs in the eighth inning. Hendricks allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Kyle Hendricks is 1-0 in his last three starts with a 0.45 ERA and 0.80 WHIP … two runs, one earned, on 14 hits with two walks and 15 strikeouts in 20 innings.
Outside of Wrigley Field this year, Hendricks is 3-2 in 10 starts with a 3.97 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Hendricks takes on the Big Red Machine for the second time this season.
