Jake Arrieta (7-5, 2.94/1.06/2.81) vs. Jacob deGrom (8-5, 2.15/0.93/2.60)
The Cubs wrap up the road trip with the final game in the regular season against the New York Mets. After squeaking out victories in the first two games, the Cubs have a shot at a series (2-0) and season-series (6-0) sweep this afternoon behind Jake Arrieta. The Cubs are 2-3 on the road trip and flying back to Chicago with a 3-3 record sounds a lot better than the alternative.
Jake Arrieta will look to pick up where the pitching staff left off. The Cubs have not allowed the Mets to cross homeplate over the first 20 innings of this series. And with Jacob deGrom on the hill at Citi Field, Arrieta will have to keep the Mets off the board while the offense attempts to put a crooked number up against deGrom.
Joe Maddon will have Miguel Montero back in his starting lineup. Will Maddon give any of his other regulars a breather today? Left handers (.238/.270/.315) hit better against deGrom than right handers (.175/.223/.211).
Today all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta is coming off back-to-back excellent outings against the Twins and Cardinals. And if not for a mistake by the Cubs bullpen, Arrieta would be creating a lot of buzz right now around the game.
Arrieta followed up his complete game gem in Minneapolis with almost as impressive of an outing in St. Louis against the greatest team and organization in all of sports. Arrieta limited the Cardinals to one run on three hits in seven innings and probably would have gone out for the eighth if Joe Maddon did not see a way for the Cubs to put more runs on the board. Arrieta ended up with a strong performance and has given up a grand total of one run on seven hits with two walks and 14 strikeouts in his last 16 innings.
Jake Arrieta is 3-1 in his last five starts with a 2.45 ERA and 1.00 WHIP that includes a 4:1 strikeout to walk ration (36 strikeouts, nine walks in 33 innings). And on the road this season, Arrieta is 5-1 in eight starts with a 2.58 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.
Arrieta faces the Mets for the second time this season. Arrieta put together one of his better outings of the season against the Metropolitans back on May 12. Arrieta gave up one run on three hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in eight innings. The 10 strikeouts are a season-high. For his career, Arrieta is 1-1 in four starts versus the Mets with a 2.03 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. At Citi Field, Arrieta is 0-1 in two starts with a 2.57 ERA and 0.79 WHIP.

The Cubs get their second look of the season at Jacob deGrom. The young right-hander just keeps impressing to the point that some in the game view deGrom as the No. 1 pitcher on the Mets’ staff. deGrom is coming off eight innings of shutout ball against the Brewers in Milwaukee. deGrom gave up four hits without a walk and struck out seven.
The last less than stellar outing from deGrom came on May 11 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs beat deGrom after putting four runs on the board in five innings. deGrom walked a season-high four batters … four of the 18 free passes deGrom has issued this year came in that five-inning outing at Wrigley. Over his last five starts, deGrom is 3-1 with a 1.21 ERA and 0.67 WHIP (six runs on 20 hits with five walks and 37 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings).
Today is Jacob deGrom’s third career start against the Cubs. deGrom is 0-1 in the first two with a 7.20 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. The Cubs face another challenge with Jacob deGrom, especially at Citi Field where he is 5-1 in eight starts with a 1.33 ERA and 0.87 WHIP.
