Jake Arrieta (8-5, 2.80/1.03/2.73) vs. Tyler Lyons (2-0, 5.09/1.52/4.39)
Weather permitting … The Cubs and Cardinals have a full day of baseball on tap with a day-night doubleheader at the old ballyard.
Joe Maddon gives the ball to Jake Arrieta this afternoon and will ask his right-hander to keep the Cardinals off the board while his offense attempts to get on track against lefty Tyler Lyons. Arrieta was scheduled to start the second game of the season (April 7) against Lance Lynn that was postponed due to frigid temperatures and forced today’s doubleheader.
Maddon will run out a right handed heavy lineup in both games. The Cardinals are sending a pair of lefties to the hill, Tyler Lyons and Tim Cooney. Anthony Rizzo is expected to play both games and Dexter Fowler will be back at the top of the batting order. Taylor Teagarden should make his Cubs’ debut in the second game with Dallas Beeler on the mound. Teagarden is familiar with Beeler from their time together in Iowa this season.
Today all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Despite giving up the only run allowed by Cubs’ pitching in New York, Jake Arrieta is coming off another excellent outing. Arrieta made one mistake in eight innings at Citi Field and Curtis Granderson ended up with a ground rule double that drove in Jacob deGrom. Arrieta likely could have gone back out for the ninth. But with the Cubs leading 6-1 there was no reason for Maddon to send him back out. Arrieta allowed one run on five hits to the Metropolitans with no walks and seven strikeouts in eight innings.
Since his dud against the Indians at Wrigley Field, Arrieta is 2-0 in three starts with 0.75 ERA and 0.58 WHIP. Arrieta has allowed two earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and 21 strikeouts in 24 innings.
Jake Arrieta is 2-4 in seven starts at Wrigley Field this year with a 3.35 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. And he faces the Cardinals for the fourth time this season. Arrieta is 1-1 in the first three with a 2.33 ERA and 1.09 WHIP (six runs, five earned, on 15 hits with six walks and 21 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings).

Lyons is making his sixth big league start of the season. And he’s coming off a win against the Phillies. Lyons gave up three runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts in five innings.
