Jake Arrieta (10-5, 2.66/0.99/2.59) vs. Shelby Miller (5-5, 2.38/1.15/3.08)
Weather permitting … The Cubs play their last game of the season at Turner Field this afternoon in a rather strange start time for getaway day. Reports from the Braves’ beat writers have stated there is no particular reason for the late afternoon scheduled first pitch, just the team testing different game times.
Joe Maddon hands the ball to Jake Arrieta. And the Cubs’ skipper is looking for Meat Loaf on a happy flight to Cincinnati. Arrieta will look to pick up where he left off in the first half and hold the Braves in check while the offense deals with Shelby Miller.
If the Cubs have enjoyed the first two games of the series, Anthony Rizzo and company are in for a real treat with Shelby Miller on the hill.
This afternoon all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta is coming off his second complete game of the season. Arrieta salvaged the finale of the Sox series and picked up his 10th win of the season. Arrieta was so dominant that several initial reports had Arrieta tossing a two-hit shutout. Arrieta faced two over the minimum and gave up one run on two hits without a walk and nine strikeouts … and he hit his first homer in pro ball.
Arrieta is 3-0 in his last three starts with a 1.52 ERA and 0.68 WHIP. Arrieta has allowed four runs on 14 hits with two walks and 20 strikeouts in his last 23 2/3 innings.
On the road this season, Arrieta is 6-1 in nine starts with a 2.39 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. Arrieta makes his third career start against the Braves today. Arrieta is 0-1 in the first two with a 5.68 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Last season, Arrieta received a no decision in his only start against the Braves. Arrieta allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. For his career, Jake Arrieta is 0-1 in one start at Turner Field with a 9.00 ERA and 1.60 WHIP (five runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five innings).

The Cubs get their first look at Shelby Miller in a Braves’ uniform. Miller dominated the Cubs during his stint with the Cardinals and he’s been pretty good in his first year with the Braves.
Miller was lights out in the first two months and made the baseball world question why the Cardinals sent Miller to Atlanta for Jason Heyward. Miller has pitched closer to his career norms over the past six weeks, which is still pretty good.
Shelby Miller finished his first half with a bad outing in Denver. And is 0-1 in his last two starts with a 3.97 ERA and 1.85 WHIP. At Turner Field this year, Miller is 2-3 in eight starts with a 1.94 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
This afternoon is Shelby Miller’s fifth career start against the Cubs. Miller is 1-0 in five games, four starts, against the Cubs with a 2.78 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. Miller received three no decisions against the Cubs a year ago and allowed seven runs on 12 hits with four walks and 14 strikeouts in 17 innings (3.71 ERA, 0.94 WHIP).
