The Cubs announced two roster moves Sunday morning.
Jorge Soler was activated from the 15-day DL and OF Matt Szczur was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. With the latest round of moves, the Cubs’ 25-man roster currently consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
Jorge Soler is in the starting lineup for Sunday’s finale with the Marlins. Soler is batting sixth.
Jorge Soler has been on the disabled list since June 3 with a sprained left ankle. He suffered a left ankle sprain on June 1 at Miami and was placed on the disabled list two days later. Soler played in four rehab games with Triple-A Iowa and was 2-for-13 with three walks and four strikeouts.
Soler was starting to make adjustments before he landed on the DL. Soler hit .288/.336/.423 during 28 games in May with eight doubles, two home runs and a .759 OPS.
For the season, Jorge Soler is batting .265/.322/.402 with 12 doubles, a triple and four home runs for a .724 OPS. Soler has 15 walks and 67 strikeouts in 49 games (189 at bats).
Matt Szczur’s shuttle between Iowa and Chicago continues. Matt Szczur is batting .211/.246/.316 in 32 games at the big league level this season with three doubles and a home run. Szczur, in 36 games for Iowa, hit .287/.361/.457 with six doubles, two triples and four home runs.
