The Cubs announced two roster moves Wednesday morning to add a reliever to the bullpen.
The Cubs recalled RHP Yoervis Medina from Triple-A Iowa. To make room on the active roster, LHP Clayton Richard was designated for assignment.
With Wednesday’s roster moves, the Cubs’ 40-man roster stands at 39 players and the active roster consists of 13 pitchers (nine relievers, four starters) and 12 position players.
RHP Dallas Beeler will be officially recalled prior to game two as the team’s 26th man.
The Cubs are hoping Richard stays in the organization. Multiple reports indicated the front office did not have another option to add a reliever to the active roster. LHP Tsuyoshi Wada and RHP Dallas Beeler are immediate candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation if the Cubs do not acquire a starting pitcher before a fifth starter is needed. Thursday’s off day gives the Cubs a little flexibility.
Clayton Richard had two good starts among his three appearances with the Cubs. Richard was 1-0 in three games, two starts, with a 5.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 4.99 FIP. In the two starts, Richard allowed five runs on 12 hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 12 innings (3.75 ERA, 1.17 WHIP).
Yoervis Medina made three appearances for the Cubs and was very good. Medina was caught in the numbers game and was demoted. Chris Bosio lobbied for him to stick around after allowing two hits with no walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
Yoervis Medina really struggled in Iowa after he was optioned down. In 16 appearances out of the I-Cubs’ pen, Medina has allowed 18 runs on 28 hits with 12 walks and 21 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings (8.68 ERA, 2.14 WHIP).
