The Cubs announced two roster moves Tuesday afternoon.
RHP Dallas Beeler was recalled from Triple-A Iowa and will start game two of the Rockies series. RHP Yoervis Medina was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to make room for Beeler on the active roster.
With the two transactions, the Cubs 25-man roster currently consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
This is Dallas Beeler’s third stint with the Cubs this season. Beeler has two no-decisions in two starts with a 6.43 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 3.07 FIP. Beeler has allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits with five walks and six strikeouts in seven innings.
Dallas Beeler is 2-5 with a 6.02 ERA (43 earned runs in 64 1/3 innings) and 1.55 WHIP in 14 starts with Iowa this season, though he is 1-0 with a 2.01 ERA (seven earned runs in 31 1/3 innings) in his last six minor league starts. Beeler began the season on the major league 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation and was activated and optioned to Triple-A on May 18. He has pitched six innings or more in four of his last six outings while allowing two earned runs or less in all six, including zero or one earned run in three starts. He has struck out 31 batters and walked only three in his last 31.1 innings.
Beeler went 9-6 with a 3.40 ERA (47 earned runs in 124 1/3 innings) and 1.16 WHIP in 20 starts with Iowa last year. He struck out 83 batters and walked only 32 in 124.1 innings pitched during his first-career season in Triple-A. Beeler is 23-29 with a 3.89 ERA (213 earned runs in 492 2/3 innings) and 1.34 WHIP in 100 career minor league outings (92 starts).
Yoervis Medina, 27, has no record with a 7.00 ERA (seven earned runs in nine innings) and 1.78 WHIP in five relief appearances with the Cubs this season and is 0-2 with one save, an 8.68 ERA (18 earned runs in 18 2/3 innings) and 2.14 WHIP in 16 relief outings with Iowa this year.
