The Cubs announced two roster moves Sunday morning.
The Cubs activated C David Ross from the 7-day DL and to make room for Ross on the 25-man roster OF/1B Mike Baxter was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
With the two roster moves, the Cubs’ 25-man roster consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
The Cubs decided to wait and not make any decisions on Miguel Montero with only one game before basically a week off. The team has not said what the MRI revealed on Montero’s left thumb. The Sun-Times reported he did not break his thumb.
The Cubs will use the break to determine the severity of Montero’s injury and explore options.
Nothing official, but it does not appear Miguel Montero will be available for Sunday’s game. If that is the case, Joe Maddon will have an even shorter bench than usual.
David Ross was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list July 4 retroactive to July 2. Ross was eligible to come off the DL prior to Friday’s game. The Cubs wanted to give him a little more time before activating him. Ross has passed all of the concussion tests.
David Ross is batting .189/.302/.284 in 38 games this season. Ross owns a 2.56 catchers ERA (53 earned runs in 186 1/3 innings) in his 28 games (22 starts) behind the plate, with the Cubs posting a 13-9 record in his starts.
OF/1B Mike Baxter hit .246/.348/.263 in 34 games with the Cubs. Baxter has one double, two RBI and a .612 OPS in the big leagues this season. At the Triple-A level, Baxter has a .290/.377/.330 slash line in 34 games with the I-Cubs.
