As the front office spent the weekend working on ways to improve Joe Maddon’s roster, it was a rather difficult three days for the team on the field. Not only were the Cubs swept by the Phillies, but The Streak came to an end and Jason Hammel’s performance Sunday raised a red flag.
Off the field, the rumor mill kicked into gear, Clayton Richard reported to Iowa and the Cubs signed a reliever to a minor league contract.

Chesny Young kept getting on base for Myrtle Beach while Donnie Dewees went yard for the first time. Several players turned in good performances at the end of the week despite the win-loss record throughout the system.

No Room for Error – Phillies 5, Cubs 3
The Cubs took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning in Friday’s opener against the Phillies. While the offense struggled against Jerome Williams, Jon Lester allowed two runs in seven innings. The Cubs could not tack on in the eighth and the Phillies scored one in the ninth off Jason Motte and two more in the 10th on a Jeff Francoeur homer off Rafael Soriano.
From the Wire: LHP Clayton Richard Clears Waivers, Cubs Option to Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs retained LHP Clayton Richard a day after he was designated for assignment. The lefty cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Iowa.
With Richard back in the fold, the 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players.
Cubs Reportedly Sign LHP Ryan Buchter to Minor League Contract
The lefty reliever the Cubs traded to the Braves for Rodrigo Lopez returned to the Cubs on a minor league deal. Ryan Buchter is a lefty specialist and the Cubs added depth to a rather thin area of the organization.

Cole Hamels made history on Saturday afternoon. The Cubs were no-hit for the first time in 50 years and the longest current streak in Major League Baseball came to an end.
It was a rough day for the organization beyond losing their second straight game to the Phillies.

The Cubs have been interested in Jonathan Papelbon at least since May. The front office is looking for ways to strengthen the bullpen and give Joe Maddon reliable late-game options.

Cubs Flat in Finale with Phillies – Phillies 11, Cubs 5
Jason Hammel had a bad start and the Cubs could not recover. A bad weekend ended with a positive thanks to a two-run homer by Addison Russell in the eighth, a 1-2-3 inning from David Ross on the mound and a home run from him in the bottom of the ninth. The Cubs’ backup catcher became the first reliever to hit a home run in nine years.
