Phillies Reportedly Close to Trading Jonathan Papelbon Before Backing Off Talks
Jonathan Papelbon would like to be dealt to a contender and the Cubs are believed to be at the top of the list of teams he would welcome a trade to before the deadline. The Phillies were reportedly close to a deal for Papelbon before backing away. Andy MacPhail is learning about the organization is not going to make a trade just to make one. The Cubs have talked about Papelbon and Cole Hamels for a long time. But the Phillies might not be making deals any time soon.

Updating news from the Cubs’ farm system … Kyle Schwarber hit a ball out of the park for the second day in a row as he wrapped up his first half on a hot streak at the plate.
Carlos Pimentel really had a good month. And Baseball Prospectus likes Kyle Schwarber and Gleyber Torres, but not as much as Baseball America.
Cubs Down on the Farm Report – 07/10/15
The Eugene Emeralds are playing good ball. RHP Jen-Ho Tseng had a good end of the week and there were some home runs hit in the Cubs’ system.
Several pitching performances went to waste as the young arms on the farm finished the week on a positive note.

Cubs Reportedly Stepping Up Efforts to Add Starting Pitching
While the Cubs were waiting on the results from the MRI on Jason Hammel’s left hamstring, the front office reportedly stepped up efforts to add starting pitching to the roster. The Cubs are extremely thin with options for the rotation and were reminded again about the lack of depth when Hammel left Wednesday’s game after one inning.

ESPN ran a poll asking questions about the managers in the game. And Joe Maddon finished toward the top in every category. Maddon was voted by the players as the manager they would like to play for the most.

Cubs Receive Good News on Jason Hammel, Not Expected to Miss Any Time
Prior to the opener with the Sox, the Cubs received good news about Jason Hammel. The Cubs are not expecting Hammel to miss any time. And he is penciled in to start the fifth game after the break, July 21 in Cincinnati.
From the Wire: Cubs Reinstate Mike Olt from DL and Option to Iowa, DFA Donn Roach
Mike Olt’s rehab assignment expired and he is not ready to be added to the big league roster. Physically Olt is fine but his struggles at the plate continued with Iowa. The Cubs had to reinstate him from the 60-day DL before optioning him to Iowa and that required a spot on 40-man roster. To make room for Olt, RHP Donn Roach was designated for assignment.
Cubs Patience Doesn’t Pay Off – White Sox 1, Cubs 0
The weekend started on a sour note for the Cubs. Kyle Hendricks was outstanding and ran his scoreless innings streak to 22 1/3 innings. The offense could not take advantage of seven walks and hit into five double plays. The only run in the game scored without the Sox recording a hit.
Baseball America’s Midseason Top Cubs Prospects
The Cubs’ prospects ranking has a much different look than it did back in February. Kyle Schwarber now tops the list followed by Gleyber Torres. Six of the 10 best minor leaguers in the system are position players according to Baseball America. And a prospect that has been overlooked finally receives some recognition.

Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella have resumed baseball activities at the team’s facility in Mesa. No timetable yet on when La Stella will start a rehab assignment or when Baez might return to Iowa. But both players are progressing and that’s a good sign going into the break.
Rafael Soriano made his third appearance out of the Smokies’ bullpen and Mike Olt launched a homer in his first game in two days.
Dexter Fowler’s wife was not very happy and Addison Russell accomplished something that has not been done by a Cubs’ player since Mark Grace in 1998.

Chris’ popular series of reports continued Saturday with a look at what it might cost the Cubs to acquire OF Gerardo Parra. The Cubs are believed to be looking for a left-handed hitting outfielder that can play center to pair with Dexter Fowler and Parra has been reported as a possibility.
Cubs Slide Continues – White Sox 5, Cubs 1
The White Sox jumped on Jon Lester with a double, triple and single from the first three batters. The Cubs managed only one run and the Sox added on in the seventh with help from the Cubs’ defense.
Report: Cubs Worked Out OF Eddy Julio Martinez, Remain in Mix for Top International Prospect
The Cubs have reportedly signed six International prospects since July 2 and the front office still has its eyes on 20-year old Cuban outfielder Eddy Julio Martinez. The Cubs have worked him out privately at least twice and have another workout scheduled.

From the Wire: Cubs Activate David Ross from 7-Day DL, Option OF/1B Mike Baxter to Iowa
With Miguel Montero unavailable for the final game before the break, the Cubs decided to activate David Ross and send out Mike Baxter instead of putting Montero on the DL.
The Cubs will use the break to determine the next step with Montero and how they will handle the catching situation if Montero has to be put on the shelf.
Jake Arrieta Pitches, Jake Arrieta Hits, Cubs Win – Cubs 3, White Sox 1
Jake Arrieta did it all Sunday. Arrieta pitched a complete games, his second of the season. And he was so dominant it felt like he tossed a shutout. Arrieta smacked the first homer of his career in the fifth inning.
Kris Bryant tripled in a run. Jorge Soler singled in another and Dexter Fowler collected his first three-hit game since late April.
The Cubs snapped the skid, beat the White Sox and went to the break with a win.

Kyle Schwarber tripled in two runs, threw out a runner on the bases and made up for his earlier mistake behind the plate by delivering the game winning hit.
Carl Edwards Jr. looked very, very good in his two-thirds of an inning.
