Tsuyoshi Wada (0-1, 4.84/1.43/4.63) vs. Shaun Marcum (3-1, 4.09/1.09/5.05)
The Cubs continue the series with the Indians tonight in the first game of a five-game road trip that ends Sunday in Minneapolis with the last of three with the Twins.
The Cubs have an important five-game road trip ahead of them before opening a seven-game homestand Monday with four against the Dodgers and three with the Cardinals.
Tsuyoshi Wada takes the ball for the Cubs tonight. But Joe Maddon should have him on a short leash. Travis Wood has not appeared in a game since June 13 and even with warming up Sunday night, Wood should be able to give Maddon innings if Wada struggles.
The Cubs were shut down Tuesday night and will look to get back on track against veteran Shaun Marcum. Kyle Schwarber is expected in the starting lineup as the Cubs’ designated hitter. And if he is, Schwarber will get a test right away with Marcum on the hill.
Joe Maddon should load up his lineup with as many lefties as possible. Marcum has handled right handers (.145/.190/.310) but has struggled with left handers (.281/.361/.472) this year.
Tonight all starts with Tsuyoshi Wada …
Joe Maddon said Tuesday he had a good conversation with Tsuyoshi Wada and was able to get him to smile. Maddon is convinced Wada starts turning his season around tonight in Cleveland.
Maddon downplayed Wada having one more shot to show he belonged in the rotation. Maddon likes Wada’s stuff and thinks he can help the Cubs win games. Wada has really struggled each of his last two times out.
Tsuyoshi Wada allowed four runs on 10 hits with five walks and 19 strikeouts in his first three starts (15 2/3 innings, 2.30 ERA, 0.96 WHIP). Over his last two starts, Wada has allowed eight runs on 13 hits with four walks and five strikeouts (6 2/3 innings, 10.80 ERA, 2.55 WHIP). Despite what Maddon said, the Cubs are trying to win games, if Maddon sees something he does not like, look for him to have a quick hook and go to his bullpen.
Tsuyoshi Wada makes his first regular season start against the Indians tonight. Wada is 0-1 in two road starts this season with a 7.56 ERA and a 1.92 WHIP. No one on Terry Francona’s active roster has faced Wada in a regular season big league game.
Shaun Marcum is coming off a very good outing against the Mariners. Marcum tossed seven innings and did not allow a run while giving up two hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Marcum is 1-1 in his last two starts with a 2.03 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP. Marcum has allowed three runs on 10 hits with a walk and nine strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings.
Marcum is the type of pitcher that has given the Cubs fits this season. And dating back to his time with the Brewers, the veteran right hander has had a lot of success against the Cubs. Obviously that was a long time ago but he knows how to pitch and could use the Cubs aggressiveness against them.
Tonight is Marcum’s seventh career start against the Cubs. Shaun Marcum is 4-1 in the first six with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.
