The Cubs announced three roster moves prior to Saturday’s game in St. Louis.
The Cubs selected the contract of RHP Donn Roach and called him up from Triple-A Iowa to make the start Saturday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Roach will wear No. 62. To make room on the 25-man roster for Roach, RHP Yoervis Medina was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
The Cubs designated C Rafael Lopez for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Donn Roach.
Joe Maddon will actually be managing a 24-man roster for the next two days. With LHP Tsuyoshi Wada not able to start Saturday due to soreness in his shoulder it is highly unlikely Wada would be available out of the bullpen. The Cubs active 25-man roster technically consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
The 40-man roster officially stands at 40 players with Saturday’s roster moves.
Donn Roach, 25, joins the Cubs after going 7-1 with a 2.29 ERA (21 earned runs in 82 2/3 innings) in 14 starts with Iowa this season. He ranks second in the Pacific Coast League in ERA, is tied for first in wins and is tied for fifth with a 1.10 WHIP, thanks in part to only issuing 15 walks in 82 2/3 innings pitched, an average of only 1.6 walks per nine innings. He has pitched six innings or more in 12 of his 14 starts this season.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Roach made his major league debut with the Padres last season, going 1-0 with a 4.75 ERA (16 earned runs in 30 1/3 innings) in 16 appearances, including one start. His previous big league start took place last May 18 when he recorded a no-decision in Colorado.
Roach made the jump from Double-A in 2013 to earn a spot on San Diego’s Opening Day roster last year before being optioned to Triple-A El Paso on June 3, where he went 4-6 with a 5.24 ERA (45 earned runs in 77 1/3 innings) in 19 appearances (13 starts) the rest of the way. He was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on November 12, 2014.
A native of Las Vegas, Roach was selected in the third round of the 2010 Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim out of the University of Arizona. He was acquired by the Padres for pitcher Ernesto Frieri in 2012, a season that saw Roach earn Single-A California League All-Star honors. Overall, Roach is 39-27 with two saves and a 3.50 ERA (207 earned runs in 532 innings) in 140 minor league appearances (81 starts) covering six professional seasons.
Yoervis Medina, 26, tossed three scoreless outings covering 5.0 innings during his first stint with the Cubs since being acquired from Seattle on May 19. Overall this season, he is 1-0 with one save and a 2.12 ERA (four earned runs in 17 innings) in 15 big league relief appearances between the Cubs and Mariners.
Rafael Lopez, 27, hit .276/.333/.340 (43-for-156) with eight doubles, one triple, no home runs and 17 RBI in 46 games with Iowa this season. Lopez appeared in seven games for the Cubs last season and was 2-for-14 with a RBI and two walks (.182/.286/.182).
