According to multiple reports, the Cubs will call-up RHP Donn Roach from Triple-A Iowa to make the start Saturday against the Cardinals.
The Cubs will not announce the necessary moves to add RHP Donn Roach to the roster until Saturday.
Reports indicated the Cubs are hoping Tsuyoshi Wada will not miss more than one turn through the rotation. If that is the case, Wada will not be placed on the disabled list in order to add Donn Roach to the active roster.
The Cubs will have to make at least three roster moves, one to add Roach to the 40-man roster, which currently stands at 40 players, and two to the 25-man roster. INF Tommy La Stella should be transferred to the 60-day DL to create the spot on the 40-man.
The Cubs claimed RHP Donn Roach off waivers from the Padres last November. Roach and Logan Watkins were designated for assignment when the Cubs claimed C Ryan Lavarnway (Dodgers) and 1B/OF Shane Peterson (Athletics) off waivers. Roach was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa and received a non-roster invitation to big league camp.
Donn Roach was 7-1 in 14 starts for the Iowa Cubs with a 2.29 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. In 82 2/3 innings, Roach allowed 76 hits with 15 walks and 33 strikeouts.
Roach appeared in 16 games and made one start for the Padres last season. Roach was 1-0 with a 4.75 ERA, a 1.68 WHIP and a 4.75 FIP. Roach allowed 17 runs, 16 earned, on 36 hits with 15 walks and 17 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings.
Donn Roach is a groundball pitcher and receives a lot of contact.
