Cubs Prospect OF Mark Zagunis Named Carolina League Player of the Week

June 23, 2015 11:30 am By Neil 1 Comment

The Carolina League recognized the week OF Mark Zagunis had for High-A Myrtle Beach and named him its Player of the Week (June 15-21).

Mark Zagunis is one of four Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Duane Underwood Jr., Jonathan Martinez and Jeimer Candelario) that will be playing in the Carolina vs. Carolina League All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 23 at LoanMart Field (9:35pm CDT) at Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Los Angeles Dodgers).

PrintZagunis led the Carolina League in batting average (.478), slugging percentage (.870) and OPS (1.425) during the six games. Zagunis reached base safely in all six games with hits in five of the six games. Zagunis recorded three multi-hit games.

During the six games, Mark Zagunis hit two home runs, a double, a triple and drove in seven runs. Zagunis walked four times. Both longballs were hit in the same game when Zagunis went 4-for-4 last Friday against the Lynchburg Hillcats.

Mark Zagunis put together a rather impressive first half while making the move to a full-time outfielder.

Zagunis batted .320/.442/.481 with 14 doubles, four triples and five home runs for a .923 OPS. Zagunis walked (47) eight more times than he struck out (39) in 63 games, 231 at bats. On the bases, Zagunis was 9-for-16 in stolen base attempts and he drove in 33 runs while scoring 44.

And the Cubs’ third round pick in the 2014 draft has made steady improvement all season. Zagunis hit .254/.392/.322 in his first 17 games. Last month in 25 games, he put together a .333/.471/.484 line with a .954 OPS. In the 21 games leading up to the break, Mark Zagunis batted .354/.446/.595 with a 1.041 OPS.
