Cubs 2015 First-Year Player Draft: Day Three

June 10, 2015 10:55 am By Neil 54 Comments

The 2015 First-Year Player Draft concludes today (11:00am CDT) with rounds 11-40. Through the first two days, the Cubs have selected six pitchers (three left-handers, three-right handers), three outfielders and one infielder. Eight of the Cubs first 10 selections are college players.

The Cubs selected OF/2B Ian Happ in the first round and OF Donnie Dewees in the second round, both of the team’s first day selections are considered two of the best college bats in the draft.

The Cubs third and fourth round picks are high schoolers LHP Bryan Hudson and OF D.J. (Darryl) Wilson. Hudson is committed to Missouri and Wilson has a commitment to Vanderbilt. Both players have a ton of upside and slot money saved by the Cubs making five straight senior picks (rounds 6-10) could be used to help sign Hudson and Wilson.

The Cubs wrapped up day two with five straight senior picks which points to the Cubs looking to save slot money to use on other players selected in draft. By no means did the Cubs waste those picks and selected pitchers that could help the big league team win games down the road. Seniors have no leverage and under the new system, teams will select college seniors in order to use the slot money elsewhere in the draft.

The Cubs selections in rounds 6-10: RHP David Berg, RHP Craig Brooks, RHP Preston Morrison, LHP Tyler Peitzmeier and SS Vimael Machin.

PrintThe Cubs signing bonus pool for the first 10 rounds of this year’s draft is $7,236,100 million down from $8,352,200 million from a year ago. If the Cubs sign a player in rounds 11-40 for more than $100,000, the excess is counted against the team’s bonus pool. If the Cubs draft a player in the first 10 rounds they are unable sign, the assigned slot value is removed from their bonus pool allotment.

Assigned Pick Values for the Cubs first 10 rounds:

  • Round One (Pick #9) – $3,351,000
  • Round Two (Pick #47) – $1,292,100
  • Round Three (Pick #82) – $731,000
