Jake Arrieta (4-4, 2.77/1.04/2.20) vs. Rubby De La Rosa (4-2, 4.08/1.11/4.00)
The Cubs will shoot to get back on track tonight and put Friday’s tough loss in the rearview mirror behind Jake Arrieta.
Even with the bullpen getting a full night off Thursday thanks to Kyle Hendricks, Joe Maddon could use a strong eight innings from Jake Arrieta today. The bullpen had to cover too many innings after Hector Rondon had issues in the 10th inning.
The Cubs offense is sputtering along right now, which is to be expected from a lineup that depends on its young players to produce. Despite the offensive woes, the Cubs are 2-2 on the trip and could easily be 4-0 at this point with two left in what is just a bad place for the Cubs to play.
Left handers have lit up Rubby De La Rosa this year. Tonight might be a good time to give Jorge Soler a break and let Mike Baxter play right field in order to get another lefty in the starting lineup. Left handers have put together a .301/.353/.524 line against him with a .846 OPS. Right handers have managed only a .181/.211/.279 line.
Jake Arrieta is coming off a very good, Arrieta-like outing against the Pirates. Arrieta allowed one run to the Pirates in seven innings after a wind-aided bloop double and a single. Arrieta kept the Pirates in check but was not able to keep them off the board. A.J. Burnett outpitched Arrieta last Sunday.
Arrieta has put together two very good starts in a row. Arrieta is 1-3 in his last four starts with a 3.55 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.
On the road this year, Arrieta is 2-1 in three starts with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.
Jake Arrieta has faced these Diamondbacks only once in his career. And that came last July 20 in Chase Field. Arrieta was hung with the loss (3-2) after giving up three runs on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in 6 3/2 innings.
Diamondbacks Career Numbers against Jake Arrieta
- Aaron Hill: 6-for-14 with two doubles and one home run
- Cliff Pennington: 2-for-6 with one double
- Mark Trumbo: 1-for-4 with one walk
- Paul Goldschmidt: 0-for-3
- Ender Inciarte: 1-for-3 with one double
- David Peralta: 1-for-3 with one double
The Cubs get their first look at Rubby De La Rosa. De La Rosa is coming off an excellent nine-inning outing against the Marlins. De La Rosa gave up just two runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. De La Rosa has completed at least seven innings in each of his last three outings. And of the eight starts he’s made this year, only two of them should be considered poor outings.
Rubby De La Rosa is 2-1 in his last four starts with a 3.54 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. Teams have hit only .204 against him.
At Chase Field this season, De La Rosa is a perfect 3-0 in four starts with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.
The Cubs face a very tough challenge with Rubby De La Rosa.
