The Cubs announced three roster moves prior to Tuesday night’s game in San Diego.
The Cubs recalled OF Junior Lake from Triple-A Iowa. LHP Tsuyoshi Wada was activated from the 15-day DL. Wada is scheduled to start Wednesday. And the Cubs selected the contract of OF/1B Mike Baxter from Triple-A Iowa.
Junior Lake and Mike Baxter are with the team in San Diego and will be available off the bench for Joe Maddon for Tuesday’s game.
Roster changes since Cubs last game on Sunday: Welington Castillo was traded to Seattle for RHP Yoervis Medina. LHP Phil Coke was designated for assignment. RHP Brian Schlitter was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. OF Junior Lake was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs selected the contract of OF/1B Mike Baxter from Triple-A Iowa, added him to the 40-man and 25-man roster.
With the roster moves from the last 48 hours, the Cubs 40-man roster stands at 39 players.
The Cubs active roster (25-man roster) consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
Junior Lake has played in four games for the Cubs this season. Lake is 4-for-14 with a double (.286/.286/.357). In 22 games for Triple-A Iowa this year, the 25-year old Lake batted .250/.353/.292 with a .645 OPS. Lake had three doubles, 12 walks and 22 strikeouts in 85 plate appearances.
OF/1B Mike Baxter, 30, signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in the off-season that included a non-roster invite to big league camp. The lefty hitting outfielder/first baseman owns a .225/.331/.342 career slash line over five seasons with the Padres (2010), Mets (2011-2013) and Dodgers (2014).
Baxter played in 34 games for Triple-A Iowa where he hit .290/.377/.330 with four doubles and a .707 OPS.
As a pinch-hitter in the Major Leagues, Mike Baxter is 21-for-70 with 10 doubles, 11 walks and 14 strikeouts (.300/.402/.443) for a .845 OPS.
