The Cubs system received another accolade Monday when OF Billy McKinney was named Carolina League Player of the Week (May 4-10).
McKinney had five multi-hit games during the nine-game stretch between May 4-10. McKinney was 13-for-30 with four doubles, two triples, a home run, nine runs scored, 12 RBI, eight walks and two strikeouts.
Billy McKinney leads the Carolina League in batting average (.340), on-base percentage (.432) and slugging percentage (.545).
In his last 12 games, Billy McKinney hit .405/.491/.810 with a 1.300 OPS. McKinney has hit four doubles, two triples and three home runs while driving in 17 runs with eight walks and five strikeouts.
For the season (29 games), McKinney is batting .340/.432/.544 with five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 17 walks and 13 strikeouts for a .976 OPS.
Billy McKinney leads the Cubs minor leaguers in batting average (.340) and RBI (25) over the first 29 games of the season. McKinney is in the top four in the organization in OBP (.432), SLG (.544), home runs (4) and walks (17).
Billy McKinney was named to MLB Pipeline’s Prospect Team of the Week. McKinney was the only Cubs’ prospect to make this week’s team.
The Cubs acquired McKinney from the Oakland A’s last July 4 along with INF Addison Russell, RHP Dan Straily and cash for RHP Jeff Samardzija and RHP Jason Hammel.
Billy McKinney is the fourth player in the Cubs system to win a player of the week award this season. 1B Dan Vogelbach won player of the week awards (April 9-19, April 20-26) in the Southern League. C/OF Cael Brockmeyer was the Offensive Player of the Week in the Midwest League (April 9-19) and RHP Tyler Skulina took home the pitcher award (April 27-May 3) in the Carolina League last week.
