Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft is less than two weeks away (June 8-10). And it is shaping up to be a very interesting draft because there does not appear to be a clear cut No. 1 pick.
The Cubs have the ninth overall pick in the first round and there are varying opinions on which direction Jason McLeod will go with the team’s first round selection. The Cubs have taken a position player in each of the three years the current administration has been in charge. And based on the history of this front office, the safe bet is that the Cubs will draft a position player in the first round.
Jim Callis is the latest draft expert to predict the Cubs will take Arkansas OF Andrew Benintendi in the first round, if the Red Sox do not select him with the seventh overall pick. The Cubs, Red Sox and White Sox have been linked to several of the same players.
Andrew Benintendi has really improved his stock this spring and is widely considered a top 10 pick. Benintendi was recently named SEC Player of the Year in a conference that includes SS Dansby Swanson (Vanderbilt) and SS Alex Bregman (LSU).
The lefty hitting Benintendi certainly fits the profile of the type of player the front office has selected since they took over the Cubs.
Jim Callis’ Mock Draft
Jim Callis has the Cubs taking OF Andrew Benintendi in the first round. The Cubs have been connected to RHP Carson Fulmer (Vanderbilt), RHP Jon Harris (Missouri State), RHP Walker Buehler (Vanderbilt) and LHP Brady Aiken. Callis thinks the Cubs would like to draft a pitcher and are interested in the same arms as the White Sox but in the end will take a position player.
Callis also pointed out the Cubs have spent a lot of time on OF Daz Cameron, OF Trenton Clark and SS Cornelius Randolph.
Keith Law’s Mock Draft
Keith Law thinks the Cubs will select OF Trenton Clark in the first round, the same prediction made earlier in the month by FanGraphs.
Law has heard the Cubs are also interested in OF Andrew Benintendi, RHP Carson Fulmer, RHP Jon Harris and OF Garrett Whitley. And Law thinks OF Daz Cameron could also be an option for the Cubs if he is still on the board.
Keith Law pointed out the Cubs will likely use the same strategy as last year. Draft a position player in the first round and pay over slot for pitchers in the later rounds. Law said a name to keep an eye on for the Cubs is prep lefty Bryan Hudson from Alton, IL. The southpaw is 6-foot-7 and “has one of the better curveballs in the draft.”
Law has SS Dansby Swanson and SS Alex Bregman going in the first two picks to the Diamondbacks and Astros. Law thinks OF Daz Cameron will go the Red Sox, RHP Carson Fulmer to the White Sox and OF Andrew Benintendi slipping to the Rays.
