Kyle Hendricks (0-0, 5.74/1.09/3.27) vs. Gerrit Cole (3-0, 2.19/1.05/2.27)
The Cubs give the ball to Kyle Hendricks tonight in search of their fifth straight win and a sweep over the Pirates. The Cubs have already won the series and equaled their total number of victories from a year ago against the Pirates at Wrigley Field (2-7 in 2014).
The Cubs face a tough task tonight with Gerrit Cole on the hill for the Bucs. Cole is one of the best young pitchers in baseball. Cole has not lost to the Cubs and has been very, very good this season. The Cubs will have to beat the best the Pirates have in order to spend the off day at home riding a five-game winning streak.
Kyle Hendricks’ best start of the three he’s made this season came at Wrigley and he will face a Pirates’ team that got to him in the sixth inning of his last outing. Maddon is not concerned about Hendricks. Maddon thinks Hendricks will continue to improve each time out as the weather heats up.
Tonight it all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks pitched better his last time out than his final line indicates. Hendricks appeared to run out of gas in the sixth inning. And the Pirates took advantage. Hendricks gave up two doubles to the three batters he faced in the sixth before Maddon went and got him. Hendricks watched the Cubs lead disappear on the bench along with what was a decent looking stat line for the afternoon. The Cubs ended up losing the game and questions were raised as to why he was pulled after throwing 90 pitches. Hendricks relies on location and he missed his spots badly in the sixth inning.
The Cubs could use another outing today from Hendricks similar to the one he turned in on April 18 against San Diego at Wrigley. Hendricks notched his first, and only, quality start of the season and looked a lot like the pitcher that caught so many teams by surprise last year.
Kyle Hendricks had a lot of success last season at Wrigley and was pretty good in his only appearance in front of the home crowd this year. Hendricks owns a 4-1 record in eight career starts at the Friendly Confines with a 2.12 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP, nearly two runs less per nine at home than on the road.
Tonight is the second career start for Kyle Hendricks against the Pirates. Hendricks allowed three runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings to Pittsburgh in his last start.
Pirates Career Numbers against Kyle Hendricks

The Cubs get their first look of the season at Pirates’ ace Gerrit Cole. Cole has been very good this year for the Bucs and hasn’t allowed more than one earned run in each of his last three outings. Cole’s worst start came on Opening Day against the Reds. And unfortunately for the Cubs, he seems to be getting better each time out.
Gerrit Cole limited the Diamondbacks to one run on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings in Phoenix. Cole is 1-0 in two road starts this year with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP … and he’s never lost a game to the Cubs.
Gerrit Cole has made five starts against the Cubs over the course of his two-year big league career and he’s a perfect 5-0. Cole has allowed 14 runs, 12 earned, on 31 hits with seven walks and 37 strikeouts in 31 innings (3.48 ERA, 1.23 WHIP).
And tonight is Gerrit Cole’s fourth career start at Wrigley Field. Cole is 3-0 with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP (10 runs, eight earned, on 21 hits with three walks and 24 strikeouts).
