Jon Lester (0-1, 7.84/1.94/1.62) vs. Andrew Cashner (0-2, 4.09/1.73/4.88)
Weather permitting … The Cubs will look to hit the road with another series victory under their belt this afternoon behind Jon Lester. The Cubs have a chance to start the season with a 3-0-1 record in the first four series.
After facing James Shields and Tyson Ross, it will not get any easier for the offense today. Andrew Cashner takes the ball for Bud Black and will look to silence the organization that drafted and traded him away. The Cubs must make him work early and not allow him to settle in. If Cashner gets comfortable he could end up with an outing similar to the one he had against the Cubs in the Cactus League.
Look for David Ross to be behind the plate today. And Hector Rondon will likely be unavailable due to the 31 pitches he threw Saturday, plus the fact he’s pitched in seven of the Cubs first 10 games this season.
This afternoon all starts with Jon Lester …
Jon Lester takes the ball for the third time on the young season today. Lester is looking to put his team in position to win the game and series this afternoon. The Cubs are 1-1 in his first two starts but to say Lester has struggled would be an understatement.
After giving up three runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts to the Cardinals in 4 1/3 innings on Opening Night, the Reds scored six runs on Lester in six innings. Lester gave up three runs in the first and three more in the sixth inning to the Reds. Jorge Soler helped take him off the hook with a pair of home runs and Arismendy Alcantara drove in the winning run in the 10th inning.
The Padres game plan will be to run and run and run some more when they get on base today. Joe Maddon said the Cubs were working on ways to slow down the other team’s running game with Lester on the hill. Today will be another test for Lester and David Ross.
Jon Lester makes just his second career start against the Padres today. Lester held the Friars to one run on six hits in seven innings at Fenway Park on July 3, 2013.
Padres Career Numbers against Jon Lester
- Derek Norris: 1-for-7 with one home run and five walks
- Yangervis Solarte: 0-for-8
- Justin Upton: 5-for-7 with two home runs and two walks
- Wil Myers: 2-for-6 with one double and one home run
- Wil Nieves: 1-for-4

Andrew Cashner gets another shot to show Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer what they traded to San Diego for Anthony Rizzo. Cashner is off to a rough start to his season, but he will bring his A-game this afternoon.
Cashner gave up six runs, five earned, on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts in five innings to the Dodgers on April 8. And the Diamondbacks scored four unearned runs against Cashner his last time out on seven hits in six innings.
In two starts this season, Cashner has allowed 10 runs, five earned, on 15 hits with four walks and 15 strikeouts in 11 innings.
