Travis Wood (1-1, 4.19, 1.50) vs. Vidal Nuno (1-1, 8.10, 1.60)
This is it, the final spring game of the year … 32 down, one to go. After today, every pitch and every at bat counts.
The Cubs wrap up the exhibition season with the second of two games with the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Today’s Cubs lineup is expected to feature several of the top prospects in the system, including Kris Bryant, Addison Russell and Javier Baez.
Travis Wood is scheduled to pitch the first inning. And Kyle Hendricks will follow Wood for an inning. The rest of the players that will make-up the Cubs first roster of the season left Arizona earlier today.
Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies have today’s game on WGN-TV Ch. 9 and for one last time, Mick Gillispie has the call on Cubs.com.
Travis Wood reported to camp as the favorite to begin the season as Joe Maddon’s fourth or fifth starter, if he wasn’t traded. Wood has performed the way a fifth starter usually does in the spring. He’s been very good, average and not-so-good in five Cactus League games.
Wood is coming off a decent outing against the Mariners in Peoria. Wood gave up three runs on five hits in five innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
The strikeout to walk ratio Wood has posted this spring is rather encouraging. In 19 1/3 innings in the Cactus League, Wood walked three while notching 13 strikeouts.
Travis Wood has done a better job of finding a rhythm and throwing strikes this spring than he did a year ago. A strong finish to a solid spring would be good way for Wood to start the season.
In five Cactus League starts, Wood allowed 11 runs, nine earned, on 26 hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.
Kyle Hendricks scoreless innings streak came to a screeching halt his last time out. Hendricks had not allowed a run in his first two Cactus League games and shut the Giants out for five innings his last time out. Hendricks ran out of gas and was charged with five runs while recording only one out in the sixth inning.
Today is Hendricks’ fourth appearance in a Cactus League game. Hendricks has allowed five runs on 10 hits with a walk and nine strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings (3.65 ERA, 0.89 WHIP).
Vidal Nuno is starting for the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Nuno has pitched out of the bullpen this spring and the lefty has allowed nine runs on 14 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in four Cactus League appearances.
Trevor Cahill was scheduled to start today’s game. Cahill was dealt the Braves Thursday. Nuno is starting the season in Arizona’s bullpen.
