From the Wire: Cubs Option OF Matt Szczur to Triple-A Iowa, Select Contract of RHP Gonzalez Germen

April 19, 2015 1:30 pm By Neil 6 Comments

The Cubs announced three roster moves prior to Sunday’s game against the Padres.

The Cubs selected the contract of RHP Gonzalez Germen from Triple-A Iowa and added him to the 40-man roster. To make room on the 40-man, RHP Jacob Turner was transferred to the 60-day DL. The Cubs placed Turner on the 15-day DL on April 5 (retroactive to March 27) with right shoulder inflammation.

Gonzalez Germen was activated and is available out of the bullpen for the finale with the Padres.

OF Matt Szczur was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to create a spot on the 25-man roster for Germen.

With the three roster moves, the Cubs’ 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players. The team’s active roster consists of 13 pitchers, an eight-man bullpen and 12 position players.

PrintGonzalez Germen, who will wear uniform number 71, has tossed four scoreless appearances for Iowa this season, going 2-0 with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.  Germen was claimed off waivers from Texas on January 23.

Germen is 1-2 with one save and a 4.31 ERA (31 earned runs in 64 2/3 innings) in 54 relief appearances covering the last two seasons with the New York Mets.  He has struck out 64 batters in 64 2/3 innings pitched while limiting opponents to a .248 batting average, including a .229 mark by right-handed hitters.  Germen went 1-2 with one save and a 3.93 ERA (15 earned runs in 34 1/3 innings) in 29 outings for the Mets in 2013, and posted no record and a 4.75 ERA (16 earned runs in 30 1/3 innings) in 25 appearances in 2014.

The 6-foot-1, 202-pound Germen originally signed with the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2007.  He is 40-31 with 10 saves and a 3.48 ERA (212 ER/548.0 IP) in 152 appearances (80 starts) in eight minor league seasons in the Mets (2008-14) and Cubs (2015) farm systems.

Matt Szczur played in eight games and was 2-for-10 with one double, three walks and two strikeouts in 15 plate appearances.
