Jason Hammel (1-1, 3.86, 1.21) vs. Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 7.15, 1.50)
The Cubs and White Sox square off for the second and final time in the Cactus League this afternoon. The Cubs took round one from the Sox last Friday at Camelback Ranch and today’s exhibition game has quite the storyline.
Jeff Samardzija, the White Sox Opening Day starter, is facing the Cubs for the first time since he was traded to Oakland last summer. And his mound opponent for the day, Jason Hammel, was in the same deal that helped net the Cubs SS Addison Russell, OF Billy McKinney and RHP Dan Straily. Russell is arguably the top shortstop prospect in the game, McKinney is consistently ranked among the Cubs’ top 10 prospects and Straily was used in the deal with Houston to acquire OF Dexter Fowler.
Sloan Park will be packed this afternoon with another sold out crowd and the crosstown rivals should challenge the all-time Spring Training attendance record.
Today all starts with Jason Hammel …
After a not-so-good beginning to his Cactus League season, Jason Hammel has been the exact opposite over the last two starts. Hammel struggled with his command and could not locate his fastball, and for Hammel he builds off his fastball. Hammel worked with Chris Bosio and turned an all-fastball side session into results the last two times out.
Hammel allowed six runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts over his first five innings (two starts). Over his last nine innings, Hammel has not allowed a run and given up only five hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts.
Jason Hammel is coming off a very good outing against a not-so-full-strength Padres lineup. But nine strikeouts and no walks over five innings is pretty good regardless of the lineup.
In four starts in the Cactus League, Jason Hammel has allowed six runs on 14 hits with three walks and 15 strikeouts in 14 innings.
Jeff Samardzija makes his fourth Cactus League start today facing his old team for the first time. Samardzija should be at the top of his game today, after all it’s a big game for him, even though it doesn’t count. Samardzija is coming off a rough outing against the Brewers and he’s given up his fair share of runs and hits this spring.
The Brewers touched up Samardzija for five runs, all earned, on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Samardzija served up three homers, one each by Logan Schafer, Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun.
In 11 1/3 innings over three Cactus League starts, Jeff Samardzija has allowed nine runs on 15 hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Zach Duke, Matt Albers, Dan Jennings, Javy Guerra and Arcenio Leon are also on the White Sox pitching roster for today’s game.
