- Game Time – 3:05pm CDT

- Location – Sloan Park, Mesa
Jason Hammel (0-1, 10.80, 2.40) vs. Danny Duffy (0-0, 6.75, 1.50)
The Cubs return to their spring home to face the American League Champion Kansas City Royals. And Joe Maddon should have his players ready to compete today after appearing to just go through the motions Monday against the Padres. The players looked flat, similar to the way Jon Lester described his pitches.
Joe Maddon will use a designated hitter one last time on the spring this afternoon. Kris Bryant is expected to be the DH today, but starting Wednesday the Cubs starting pitchers will hit in order to get in a few swings in game action, and bunts down, before Opening Night.
Len Kasper and Mick Gillispie have the call on Cubs.com from Sloan Park this afternoon.
Today all starts with Jason Hammel …
Jason Hammel has struggled this spring. Hammel has missed his spots while getting his work in and just appears to be battling himself a little bit. Hammel makes his third start this afternoon after giving up three earned runs in each of his first two outings.
The Rockies scored three runs on four hits against Hammel back on March 7. Hammel barely made it through the first inning and ended up going two frames. Hammel was on the hill for Will Ferrell Day. And the Angels also put a three spot on the board over three innings against Hammel.
For the spring, Jason Hammel has allowed six runs, all earned, on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
Danny Duffy, like Hammel, takes the mound for the third time on the spring today. Duffy is also coming off a not-so-good outing. Duffy gave up three runs on six hits in two innings to the Tribe on March 12. But he tossed two scoreless innings versus the Reds the five days before he faced Cleveland in Goodyear.
Over his first two spring outings, Duffy has allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and one strikeout in four innings.
Lefty Brandon Finnegan is also scheduled to pitch for the Royals this afternoon.
