Edwin Jackson (1-1, 0.00, 1.40) vs. Rubby De La Rosa (0-1, 3.38, 1.38)
The Cubs make the trip from Mesa to Scottsdale for their first night game of the spring. The Cubs have won six of the last seven Cactus League games and have played much better ball over the last week.
Two of the four pitchers competing for the fifth spot in the rotation are scheduled to pitch tonight. Edwin Jackson gets the start. And after four innings, he is expected to hand the ball to LHP Felix Doubront. Like Jackson, Doubront is scheduled for four innings tonight.
Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies have tonight’s game, commercial free, on Comcast SportsNet. And Ron Coomer will join Mick Gillispie in the booth to call the action on Cubs.com.
Tonight all starts with Edwin Jackson …
Edwin Jackson makes his third Cactus League start tonight. Jackson is coming off a decent outing against the Brewers that looked very good in the box score. Jackson tossed three scoreless innings last Saturday in Maryvale with two walks and two strikeouts.
Over two Spring Training games, Jackson has been charged with four unearned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
While it appears Travis Wood has all but locked up the fifth spot in the rotation, Jackson is still in the mix along with Felix Doubront and Eric Jokisch.
Edwin Jackson is scheduled to pitch four innings tonight and Felix Doubront is expected to follow him for four innings.
While Jackson has been serviceable, Doubront hasn’t in his two spring outings. Doubront has struggled and allowed seven runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts in five innings. The positive for Doubront this spring, he hasn’t walked a batter. Doubront gave up six runs on nine hits over three innings to the Angels on Will Ferrell Day. Doubront could really use a good outing tonight in Scottsdale.
Phil Coke, Jorge De Leon, Blake Parker and Francisley Bueno are also on the pitching roster for tonight’s game.
RHP Rubby De La Rosa makes his fourth appearance and third start of the spring tonight. De La Rosa allowed three runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts over three innings his last time out against the Mariners.
In his first three outings, De La Rosa has allowed three runs on five hits with six walks and six strikeouts in eight innings. De La Rosa has good stuff but has continued to struggle with his command this spring.
