The Yoan Moncada sweepstakes could be nearing an end, and if so, as expected the Cubs will not be one of the last teams involved in the process.
The information gathering part of the process for Yoan Moncada was expected to come to an end on Feb. 23 and Moncada would likely sign a contract soon after for a lot of cash. But Moncada’s agent might have moved up the timeframe.
According to a report Saturday from Jon Paul Morosi, Moncada’s agent, David Hastings, said “it’s realistic Moncada could sign in the next week.” Hastings also said he has not received any formal offers yet, which contradicts reports last week that indicated Moncada had received at least one offer.
As reported Saturday, the price for Yoan Moncada could be increasing. According to Ken Rosenthal, Moncada could be looking at a $40-50 million bonus which would make him an $80-100 million player. The New York Post confirmed the price tag for Moncada could be approaching the $50 million mark.
David Hastings told teams that Moncada is “receptive to offers and would like to conclude this process as soon as possible.” The goal is to get Moncada signed so he can “participate in Spring Training.”
The Yankees are considered the frontrunners of about 12 teams that are seriously pursuing Moncada.
The Cubs reportedly were doing their due diligence last week by attending Moncada’s workout in Clearwater. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks also had representatives in Clearwater, where the Phillies spring home is located, to watch Moncada.
The Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Padres, Tigers, Braves, Rays, Angels, Dodgers and Brewers have held at least one private workout. The A’s, Cardinals and Phillies are also believed to be very interested in Moncada.
The Cubs were reportedly one of the most aggressive teams on Moncada, but the front office cannot sign a player during the current International signing period for more than $250,000. The 2014-15 signing period ends on June 15. The Cubs are expected to be very active and to blow past their International signing bonus pool during the next signing period (2015-16) which begins on July 2.
