Updated 9:20am CST, Feb. 4 – Jon Heyman confirmed Pedro Feliciano has signed a minor league contract with the Cubs. The deal would pay Feliciano $700,000 if he makes the roster and the contract includes an incentives package.
According to Jon Paul Morosi, the Cubs are closing in on a minor league deal with veteran lefty reliever Pedro Feliciano.
If the Cubs finalize the contract with Feliciano, he will be in big league camp on a non-roster invite and will receive a base salary of $700,000 if he makes the Major League roster.
Following a good run with the Mets that he turned into a multi-year contract with the Yankees, the now 38-year old lefty missed the 2011 and 2012 seasons after undergoing shoulder surgery. Feliciano tore a capsule in his left shoulder and tried to rehab the injury before having surgery.
Pedro Feliciano re-signed with the Mets as a free agent in March of 2013. Feliciano was 0-2 in 25 appearances, 11 innings, with a 3.97 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 4.46 FIP. Feliciano struck out nine batters, walked six and gave up 11 hits at the big league level.
The Mets granted Feliciano free agency in October 2013 and he signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals last season. Feliciano did not appear in a big league game for St. Louis before he was released in August. Feliciano was 1-4 in 22 appearances for Triple-A Memphis. Feliciano gave up 26 hits with eight walks and 19 strikeouts in 21 innings (5.57 ERA, 1.62 WHIP).
Pedro Feliciano has held lefties to a .212/.279/.298 line during his big league career with a .578 OPS.
