For the second year in a row, Baseball Prospectus placed seven players from the Cubs system in its Top 101 Prospect List.
Addison Russell (2), Kris Bryant (5), Jorge Soler (19), Albert Almora (38), Kyle Schwarber (77), Billy McKinney (81) and Pierce Johnson (83) landed in the pre-season ranking. Last year, Javier Baez (4), Kris Bryant (17), Albert Almora (25), Jorge Soler (45), C.J. Edwards (81), Arismendy Alcantara (83) and Pierce Johnson (91) made the list.
Russell and Bryant are the only two teammates in the top five and the Cubs joined the Dodgers as the only organization with two prospects ranked in the top 10.
Baseball Prospectus thinks a little bit more about Addison Russell than most publications. Russell is generally considered a top five prospect in the game, but he projects better than Kris Bryant according to BP.
Addison Russell was ranked behind OF Bryon Buxton (Twins) and ahead of SS Carlos Correa (Astros) and SS Francisco Lindor (Indians). Following Kris Bryant and rounding out BP’s top 10 is RHP Lucas Giolito (Nationals), SS Corey Seager (Dodgers), RHP Dylan Bundy (Orioles), RHP Noah Syndergaard (Mets) and LHP Julio Urias (Dodgers)
Generally considered the top organization in the game, the Cubs had six players in MLB Pipeline’s ranking of the top 100 prospects in Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Jorge Soler, C.J. Edwards, Kyle Schwarber and Albert Almora and just missed a seventh in Billy McKinney.
Baseball Prospectus ranked the top 10 players in the Cubs system in November. Baseball Prospectus is higher on Pierce Johnson and Carson Sands than most publications which is a positive for the Cubs.
