According to a report from Jon Heyman, the Cubs are close to a deal with RHP Jason Hammel.
The Cubs and Hammel were reportedly interested in a reunion after he put up good numbers for three months last season.
Jason Hammel was 8-5 in 17 starts with a 2.98 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 3.19 FIP. In 108 2/3 innings, Hammel gave up 36 runs on 88 hits with 23 walks and 104 strikeouts.
The Cubs dealt Hammel, along with Jeff Samardzija to the A’s on July 4 for Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and a PTBNL. The Cubs have not received the PTBNL in the deal yet to complete the trade.
Jason Hammel was 2-6 in 13 games, 12 starts, for Oakland with a 4.26 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP (66 hits with 21 walks and 54 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings).
Jason Hammel is believed to be looking for a three-year contract this winter around what Scott Feldman signed for last year with the Astros (three years, $30 million). Hammel signed a one-year deal with the Cubs for $6 million last February. Hammel pitched for Cubs manager, Joe Maddon, in Tampa from 2006-08. And Hammel obviously pitched on the same staff as Jon Lester for two-plus months at the end of last season.
The Cubs have not confirmed the signing and Jon Heyman is the only one reporting Jason Hammel is close to a deal with the Chicago Cubs.
