According to Baseball America, the Cubs recently signed five players to minor league contracts.
RHP Anthony Carter, RHP Fernando Cruz, RHP Jesus Camargo, OF Adron Chambers and INF Carlos Sepulveda inked minor league deals with the Cubs. The team has not announced signing the five players to contracts.
Additional minor league signings should be announced in the coming weeks as the Cubs work toward the beginning of Spring Training.
OF Adron Chambers, RHP Anthony Carter and INF Jonathan Herrera should be in big league camp on non-roster invitations. The Cubs have waited until late January or the first week of February the last three years to announce the team’s full list of NRIs to Spring Training.
Along with the 40 players currently on the roster, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Albert Almora and Kyle Schwarber should receive non-roster invitations to camp and included on the Cubs Spring Training roster when it’s released.
RHP Anthony Carter
RHP Anthony Carter is 28 years old, the right-hander turns 29 on April 4. Carter pitched in three games for Triple-A El Paso in the Padres system last year. Carter allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and no strikeouts in three innings (6.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP).
Carter was selected in the 26th round of the 2005 draft by the White Sox. Carter spent the 2013 season in the Red Sox system and was 2-0 in 52 appearances with a 3.47 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP … 26 runs, 24 earned, on 56 hits with 79 strikeouts and 23 walks in 62 1/3 innings.
Anthony Carter has seen a majority of his time in professional baseball as a relief pitcher. He’s made only three starts since 2009 and 85 of his 270 career appearances have been as a starter.
RHP Fernando Cruz
The Royals selected Fernando Cruz in the sixth round of the 2007 draft. Cruz began his pro career as a third baseman and a catcher but did not hit enough. Cruz batted only .221/.265/.271 as a 20-year old in the Midwest League in 2010.
The Royals converted him to a pitcher and he last appeared in Kansas City’s system in 2012. Cruz was 4-3 in 20 relief appearances with a 6.88 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP (49 hits, 17 walks, 38 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings) for Idaho Falls in the Pioneer League.
Fernando Cruz is 24-years old (March 28) and is a 6-foot-2, 205 pound right hander that hits from both sides of the plate.
RHP Jesus Camargo is 19 years old. The right hander pitched in the Mexican League as an 18-year old last year and appeared in only one game. Camargo gave up a hit and a walk in 2 1/3 innings. Camargo did not strikeout a batter.
Little information is available on INF Carlos Sepulveda. The Cub Reporter found a link that indicated he is 18-years old and also played in the Mexican League last year.
Baseball America did not provide any information on the signing bonus RHP Jesus Camargo or INF Carlos Sepulveda received from the Cubs.
Minor News and Notes
According to multiple reports, RHP Dae-Eun Rhee signed a contract to pitch for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Pacific League. Rhee became a free agent at the end of last season after pitching in the Cubs’ system since 2008. Rhee made a combined 27 appearances, 24 starts, for Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa last year. In nine games with Iowa, eight starts, Rhee was 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. Rhee turns 26 in March and allowed 23 runs, 20 earned, on 53 hits with 16 walks and 36 strikeouts in 48 innings for Iowa. Baseball America ranked Dae-Eun Rhee as the fourth best prospect in the Cubs’ system before the 2009 season.
