The Cubs announced four roster moves Wednesday and created three spots on the 40-man roster.
OF/INF Josh Vitters, INF/OF Chris Valaika and OF Ryan Kalish were outrighted to Iowa after clearing waivers. RHP James McDonald, who spent the season on the 60-day DL and did not count against the 40-man roster, elected free agency.
OF Ryan Sweeney and OF Justin Ruggiano will take two of the three spots on the 40-man roster the Cubs created Wednesday when they are activated from the 60-day DL after the conclusion of The World Series.
OF/INF Josh Vitters, the Cubs first round pick (third overall) in the 2007 draft, was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa after he cleared waivers. Vitters was removed from the 40-man roster after another disappointing, injury shortened season. Vitters hit only .213/.268/.339 in 112 games for the I-Cubs last season with 14 doubles and 11 home runs.
Vitters is the biggest name of the three that were removed from the 40-man roster. Vitters is only 25 years old but was not able to get out of his own way and fulfill the expectations placed on a third overall pick in a draft.
Josh Vitters played in just 36 games at the big league level. Vitters hit .121/.193/.202 with two doubles and two home runs in 2012.
INF/OF Chris Valaika will likely elect free agency, but could still re-sign with the Cubs on a minor league contract this winter. Valaika played in 44 games for the Cubs and hit .231/.282/.339 with four doubles and three home runs for a .621 OPS.
OF Ryan Kalish began the year on the Cubs’ active roster but after struggling in the majors he was optioned to Iowa. After the Cubs designated Kalish for assignment on Aug. 8 to make room on the 40-man roster for RHP Jacob Turner, Kalish spent the last month of the minor league season with Iowa. After injuries to Ryan Sweeney and Justin Ruggiano depleted the Cubs options in the outfield, the Cubs purchased Kalish’s contract from Triple-A Iowa on Sept. 3. In 57 games over two stints with the Cubs, Kalish his .248/.295/.347 with four doubles.
The Cubs are facing more roster decisions.
Carlos Villanueva will be removed from the 40-man roster at the conclusion of The World Series when he becomes a free agent. The Cubs also have to make decisions on club options for LHP Tsuyoshi Wada and RHP Kyuji Fujikawa.
