Kris Bryant and Javier Baez Hit Longballs for Iowa, Jorge Soler Goes Deep in Tennessee

July 7, 2014 12:15 am By Neil 4 Comments

Two days after hitting home runs in the same game for the first time, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez did it again Sunday night. Bryant and Baez hit longballs in Iowa’s 5-4 win over Oklahoma City. Bryant hit a two-run shot in the second inning that left the ballpark and put Iowa up 2-1. Baez hit a solo shot to right field in the sixth.

Kris Bryant went 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two strikeouts Sunday night while Javier Baez was 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk.

Jorge Soler made his return to Double-A Tennessee and went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI Sunday in his first game back. Soler was the Smokies’ DH in Tennessee’s 9-1 win over Birmingham when he hit his first longball at the Double-A level.

Kris Bryant was named the Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for June earlier in the day and went out Sunday night and hit his eighth longball for Iowa in 19 games. Bryant is 25-for-70 with six doubles and eight home runs with Iowa, more than half of his hits have gone for extra bases. Bryant has walked eight times with 23 strikeouts and has put together a .357/.423/.786 slash line with a 1.209 OPS.

PrintFor the season, Kris Bryant is batting .355/.451/.720 with 26 doubles, 30 home runs, 80 RBI, 229 total bases and a 1.171 OPS in 87 games between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.

Javier Baez hit his 13th longball of the season Sunday and is 9-for-32 over his last 10 games with nine walks and 10 strikeouts (.281/.429/.594/1.022) and has shown steady improvement at the plate after a miserable start to the year. Baez is up to .241/.310/.448 for the season with 17 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and a .758 OPS.

Jorge Soler keeps producing at the plate when he has been able to play. In only eight games at the Double-A level this season, Soler is 10-for-29 with seven doubles and a home run with three walks and six strikeouts (.345/.406/.690).
