Edwin Jackson (5-7, 5.12/1.49/3.86) vs. Mat Latos (0-0, 3.86/1.20/3.95)

Weather permitting … The Cubs picked up a rare win Tuesday night against the Reds at Wrigley Field and have a chance tonight behind Edwin Jackson to take the series. The Cubs posted just their third victory against the Redlegs at Wrigley Field in the last 21 matchups (3-18). And Tuesday night was the first time the Cubs beat the Reds in a game started by Homer Bailey since May 7, 2010 (10 starts). Starlin Castro led the way that night in Cincinnati in his big league debut.

Edwin Jackson is coming off another rough outing, one in which he left after five innings due to cramping in his legs. The Cubs need Jackson to do his best Jake Arrieta impersonation tonight in order to keep the Reds off the board long enough for the offense to try to put runs on the board against Mat Latos.

Mat Latos is making just his third start of the season. Latos spent the first two-plus months on the DL (first the 15-day DL, then the 60-day DL) recovering from knee surgery in February. Latos had a small setback after going out on a rehab assignment in April. Latos faced Kris Bryant in his first rehab start and after Bryant took him deep in his first at bat … and Latos plunked Bryant the next time around. Mat Latos has never lost a game at Wrigley.

Four years ago today, Edwin Jackson no-hit the Tampa Bay Rays as a member of the Diamondbacks rotation. It took Jackson 149 pitches to complete the game, but he did and put a no-hitter on his resume.

Tonight all starts with Edwin Jackson …

Edwin Jackson was in cruise control last Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Jackson was given a big lead (5-0) and he had silenced the Pirates for four innings. Jackson labored through a bad fifth innings and was lifted due to cramping in his legs. The Cubs made the announcement after the game and another short start from Edwin Jackson. Jackson picked up the win, but it was not a good outing once again. Jackson is 2-2 in his last four starts with a 6.10 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP while teams have hit .301 against him. Jackson faces the Reds for the third time this season tonight.

Edwin Jackson is 2-0 in two starts versus the Reds this year with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. And for his career, Jackson owns a mark of 4-1 in seven starts versus the Reds with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

Reds Career Numbers against Edwin Jackson

Mat Latos is making his third start of the year tonight after spending the first two-plus months of the season on the DL. Latos tossed six innings of shutout ball in his first start on June 14 in Milwaukee. Latos did not walk a batter and struck out four. Latos really struggled in his last outing and gave up a bunch of runs after his teammates gave him a big lead. The Reds scored eight runs in the second inning and ended up losing the game 14-9 to the Blue Jays. Latos left after giving up five runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Mat Latos has had his way with the Cubs over the years and is 5-2 in nine career starts against the Cubs with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP … and at Wrigley Field, Latos is a perfect 3-0 in four starts with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.
