Jason Hammel (6-4, 3.02/1.02/3.01) vs. Brandon Cumpton (2-2, 5.82/1.53/3.27)
The Cubs will look to bounce back from Saturday night’s loss this afternoon behind Jason Hammel in the rubber game of the series.
Rick Renteria needs a long, effective outing today from Jason Hammel. With Edwin Jackson cramping up Friday and Travis Wood struggling last night, the Cubs pen has been overworked the first two games of a 10-game homestand. Carlos Villanueva and Justin Grimm should be unavailable today which will limit Renteria to a six-man pen. The Cubs are closely monitoring the young relievers and if Hammel struggles early, he might have to take one for the team with the Cubs next off day not until next Sunday.
It is Throwback Sunday for the fourth time this season. The Cubs will wear throwback uniforms to honor the ’53 team this afternoon, the first season of Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks. The Cubs have hit the proverbial ball out of the park with all of the throwback uniforms the team has worn this season and this afternoon’s jersey figures to be more of the same.
The Cubs have split the first two games of the series with the Bucs. And a win today would give the team their third straight winning series, a feat the Cubs have not accomplished since last June (June 21-30) when the Cubs won three straight series against the Astros, Brewers and Mariners.
Today all starts with Jason Hammel …
Jason Hammel struggled his last time out in Miami. Hammel allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings. Hammel did set a season-high in strikeouts with nine, but he also allowed four earned runs for the second straight start. And after surrendering a season-high 11 hits to the Pirates on June 11, Hammel gave up eight hits to the Fish, the second most hits he has allowed in a single start this season.
After an excellent start to his season, Jason Hammel has gone the other way and is 0-1 in his last three starts with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. Teams are hitting .333 against him and he’s given up 25 hits with four walks and 23 strikeouts in his last 18 innings.
Jason Hammel needs a good outing today in his fourth start of the season against the Mighty Pirates.
The Pirates were able to figure out Hammel the last time he faced them in Pittsburgh. Jason Hammel is 2-1 in three starts versus the Bucs this year with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.

Brandon Cumpton followed up his win over the Cubs on June 11 with a quality start, and a no decision against the Reds. Cumpton allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts in six innings. Cumpton continues to show improvement and is 2-0 in his last three starts with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.
The Pirates’ right hander has really struggled in the three starts he’s made outside of PNC Park. Cumpton is 0-1 in three road starts with a 8.80 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP. Cumpton makes his first start at Wrigley Field today.
Brandon Cumpton picked up his second win of the season when he faced the Cubs at PNC Park. Cumpton allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five innings. Cumpton makes his second career start against the Cubs this afternoon.
