Travis Wood (7-5, 4.48/1.36/3.96) vs. Vance Worley (0-0, 0.00/0.71/1.66)
Weather permitting … The Cubs will take the field tonight in search of their third straight win behind Travis Wood. The Cubs enter play with an 11-7 record in June and a National League best 18-13 record since May 17.
The Cubs play Saturday night games at Wrigley Field the next two weeks. After the second scheduled Saturday night game in the last two years with the Pirates tonight, the Cubs play a day-night doubleheader next Saturday against the Nationals.
The offense will have an extra hitter in the lineup with Travis Wood on the hill. The Cubs’ southpaw not only won last Sunday’s game in Philadelphia with eight shutout innings, but Wood delivered the game winner in the 13th inning of Monday night’s game in Miami.
Rick Renteria should run out a balanced lineup tonight with Vance Worley on the hill for the Bucs. Lefties have managed a .272/.342/.364 line against Worley over the course of his career, while right handers have hit .291/.341/.401 against him. The former Phillie is making his second start in a Pirates’ uniform tonight.
Tonight it all starts with Travis Wood …
Travis Wood is, without a doubt, coming off his best outing of the season. Wood shut down the Phillies for eight innings last Sunday and scattered three hits after taking a no hitter into the sixth inning. Wood was sharp, found a groove and kept the ball down. Wood struck out six and issued three walks. Wood has struggled with consistency from start to start this year but has been very good at Wrigley Field this season.
Travis Wood is 3-1 in six home start this season with a 2.58 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. Wood has issued 12 walks with 42 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings in his home park this year. And Wood will face the Pirates for the third time on the season tonight.
Wood is 1-0 in two starts against the Bucs this year with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Travis Wood beat the Pirates and picked up the Cubs only win in Pittsburgh two starts ago after allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Vance Worley is making his second start for the Pirates tonight. Worley was claimed off waivers by the Pirates after things did not go well in Minnesota. Worley was dealt to the Twins in the Ben Revere trade and struggled to the point of a 1-5 record in 10 starts with a 7.21 ERA and a 1.99 WHIP. Worley turned the game over to the Pirates bullpen after tossing seven innings of five-hit shutout baseball in his Pirates debut, but the pen could not keep the Fish off the board. Worley did not issue a walk and struck out five.
Vance Worley had a lot of success in a Phillies’ uniform against the Cubs. In two career starts, Worley is 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP after allowing two runs on nine hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts in 15 innings. Tonight is his second career start at Wrigley. Worley dominated the Cubs in their park on July 20, 2011. Worley allowed one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in eight innings.
