Dallas Beeler (0-0, -.–/-.–/-.–) vs. Gio Gonzalez (4-4, 4.38/1.35/3.49)
The Cubs have a long day of baseball ahead of them at the old ballyard. But if the Cubs can win just one of the two games today, they will spend the rare off day Sunday with a series victory against a first place team under their belt.
The Cubs moved what would have been Sunday’s finale to the first of a day-night doubleheader in order to accommodate the Pride Parade on Sunday afternoon. The Cubs will not play a game on a Sunday during the regular season that was not rained out for the first time since at least 1943.
By winning the first two games of the series with the Nationals, the Cubs are 4-4 over the first eight games of the 10-game homestand. And the Cubs are back over .500 on the year at Wrigley Field (19-18).
Dallas Beeler will make his big league debut today. Beeler has been pitching in Iowa’s rotation every fifth day after missing the first month of the season. Jeff Samardzija will take on RHP Blake Treinen in the nightcap, and not Jordan Zimmermann as originally scheduled. The Nationals are calling up the right hander from Triple-A Syracuse to start the second game.
The Cubs will face a lefty starter today for the first time since taking on Francisco Liriano in Pittsburgh on June 10. The Cubs are 8-5 in games started by lefties this season.
Game one all starts with Dallas Beeler …
Dallas Beeler makes his big league debut this afternoon. Beeler was added to the 40-man roster last winter after a very successful Arizona Fall League. Beeler missed a majority of last season with a torn tendon in his pitching hand and made only nine starts. Beeler posted a 4-2 record in the limited action for Double-A Tennessee with a 3.13 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. Beeler struck out 35 batters and walked 17 in 54 2/3 innings.
Beeler was outstanding in the AFL and was 4-1 in six starts for the Solar Sox with a 2.49 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. And Beeler saved his best start in the AFL for the championship game.
Dallas Beeler bases his mechanics on Roy Halladay and can keep the ball down. Beeler sits in the low-90s with his fastball and can run it up to 94 mph when he needs to and he throws a cutter and a slider. Beeler relies on getting early contact.
In 10 starts for Iowa this season, Dallas Beeler is 5-3 with a 4.03 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. In 60 1/3 innings, Beeler has allowed 56 hits with 15 walks and 43 strikeouts.
Gio Gonzalez has not really been Gio Gonzalez this season … but he’s coming off a good outing in Milwaukee. The A’s, Mets and Astros lit up Gonzalez around a trip to the DL in his three starts leading up to his last game in Milwaukee. Gonzalez tossed six innings of shutout ball while allowing three hits with four walks and five strikeouts to the Brewers.
Gio Gonzalez spent from May 18 to June 18 on the disabled list with a left shoulder issue. And while he first start back against Houston wasn’t good, the Cubs are very likely to get the very good Gonzalez today.
Gio Gonzalez is 2-3 in six road starts this season with a 4.54 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. And he makes his fifth career start against the Cubs this afternoon.
Gio Gonzalez is 1-1 in four starts against the Cubs with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP … at Wrigley Field, 0-1 in two starts with a 10.38 ERA and a 2.42 WHIP.
