Jeff Samardzija (1-4, 1.68/1.07/2.79) vs. Kyle Lohse (6-1, 2.92/1.08/3.43)
The Cubs wrap up the 10-game road trip this afternoon in Milwaukee. With Saturday’s victory, the Cubs are 4-5 in the first nine games and have a chance to finish the three-city tour through San Diego, San Francisco and Milwaukee with a .500 record.
A victory this afternoon would also give the Cubs their first series win on the road since last September (Sept. 9-11). The Cubs are 0-10-3 in their last 13 series outside of Wrigley Field.
Jeff Samardzija, with countless scouts on hand today, will shoot to keep his season on track while hoping the offense is able to put runs on the board against Kyle Lohse. It has seemingly been all or nothing of the offense over the last week. But with Lohse on the hill, the Cubs scoring chances figure to be few and far between today.
The last game of the long road trip all begins with Jeff Samardzija …
As is well known by now, Jeff Samardzija is coming off his first victory of the season and a very good outing in San Francisco. Samardzija pitched into the eighth inning and allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in seven-plus innings. Samardzija struck out a season-high 10 batters while not issuing a free pass. And he helped himself at the plate. Samardzija doubled in the tying run and scored the go ahead run.
Over his last five starts, Jeff Samardzija is 1-1 with a 1.32 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP. In 34 innings, he has given up 21 hits with eight walks and 33 strikeouts. Samardzija is 1-1 in five road starts this season with a 1.93 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. And Samardzija will face the Brewers for the second time this season.
One of Samardzija’s rough starts this season came against the Brewers on May 16 at Wrigley Field. The Brewers made Jeff Samardzija work, ran up his pitch count and Samardzija was lifted after five innings. His outing against the Brewers came after two starts (White Sox and Braves) that taxed Samardzija and at that point, the Cubs were being very cautious with his innings and pitch count.
For his career, Samardzija is 2-5 in 21 appearances, seven starts, against the Brewers with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP … at Miller Park, 0-2 in 11 appearances, two starts, with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.

Kyle Lohse was cruising right along until he ran up against the Orioles in his last start. The Brewers were 8-1 in Lohse’s nine starts leading up to his last outing and Lohse had not allowed more than three earned runs in any of those games, including one against the Cubs on May 16. But the Orioles scored four runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings and while Lohse did not walk a batter, he struck out five.
Kyle Lohse has been very good this year and is 2-1 at Miller Park in five starts with a 2.80 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP, and he’s already beaten the organization that drafted him.
For his career, Kyle Lohse is 6-6 in 21 starts against the Cubs with a 5.08 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.
