Edwin Jackson (3-4, 4.94/1.44/3.45) vs. Tim Lincecum (4-3, 4.55/1.61/3.97)
The Cubs wrap up the three game series in San Francisco this afternoon with a chance to win a series on the road. With the Cubs taking the first game behind Jeff Samardzija, if the good Edwin Jackson can show up this afternoon and if the offense grinds out at bats against Tim Lincecum, the team could leave California with four wins in seven games.
The Cubs have not won a road series since taking two of three from the Reds in Cincinnati last September (Sept. 9-11) and are 0-9-3 in last 12 road series.
After being shut out on Tuesday night, the Cubs have scored three or fewer runs in 28 of their 50 games. The Cubs are 4-25 when scoring three runs or less and 0-18 when scoring two runs or less.
Rick Renteria should run out a balanced lineup this afternoon. Right handers (.280/.321/.448) and lefties (.313/.407/.398) have similar numbers against Tim Lincecum this season.
And the finale in by the Bay all starts with Edwin Jackson …
Edwin Jackson followed up his best outing in a Cubs uniform with one of his worst. Jackson was horrible his last time out against the Padres and gave up eight runs on nine hits in four innings to the light-hitting Padres. Jackson had allowed only two home runs all season entering his start on Friday night and the Padres took him deep twice in the first two innings. It was a bad night and one that Jackson will hopefully put behind him today. Due to his last outing, Jackson is 1-2 in his last four starts with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.
Jackson has struggled on the road this season to the tune of a 1-3 record in five starts with a 6.67 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. And Jackson makes his seventh career start against the Giants this afternoon.
Edwin Jackson is 2-2 in seven career appearances, six starts, against the Giants with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Last year, he had two no decisions in two starts (seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with six walks and 14 strikeouts in 12 innings) with the Giants and Jackson is 1-1 in three starts at AT & T with a 2.29 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

Tim Lincecum has struggled with his command of late but is coming off a win against the Twins (two runs on five hits with six walks and four strikeouts in six innings). After a rough first month, really due to one bad start, Lincecum has allowed just a hit an inning while striking out a batter an inning, but the free passes have become an issue for Lincecum again. Lincecum is 3-2 in his last five starts with a 3.34 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. Over his last 29 2/3 innings, Lincecum has allowed 29 hits and walked 18 batters with 29 strikeouts. And he’s issued nine of those walks in his last two starts.
Tim Lincecum is 2-2 in six starts at AT & T this season with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP and he will make his 13th career start against the Cubs today.
Lincecum is 4-5 in 12 career starts against the Cubs with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP … last season, 0-1 in two starts with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP.
