CCO Fantasy Baseball League – Week 6

May 13, 2014 1:45 am By TheCCO 26 Comments

Runnin Bredstiks and Kentucky Ripsnorters once again try to stay undefeated and had good games this week, while we had some pretty close match-ups with teams trying to move up into the playoffs. Overall, this was not a good week to be one of the top teams that were 5-0 and 4-1 as they went 0-5 on the week. Let’s take a closer look at the past week in the CCO FBL.

Waiting on Bryant (2-4) 342 over Kentucky Ripsnorters (5-1) 335

Kentucky Ripsnorters (5-1) tried to come back on Sunday, but Waiting on Bryant pulled out the 7 point victory to knock Rip out of the undefeated ranks.  Bryant was led by a huge 53 points by Jeff Samardzija.  Now keep in mind, he did this in 2 starts but without a W to pad his points.  14 K’s in 15 innings was good, but only 5 hits and 3 walks is ACE like and teams have to be taking note (Toronto could really use some starting pitching). Bryant also had Edwin Encarnacion hit 4 HR’s and drive in 10 runs on his way to 41 points on the week and Jose Reyes comes in 3rd on his team with 37 points in a well-balanced week where he stole 4 bases, hit 2 HR’s and drew 5 free passes.  Bryant also had 6 more players break the 20 point barrier.  He also lost 13 points from Travis Wood’s bad start.  Rip was led by Robbie Ray and his 35 points in 2 starts.  Asdrubal Cabrera put up 31 points with 2 HR’s and 4 RBI’s to lead the offense.  But just like in real baseball, Pedro Strop came in and could only record 1 out while giving up 3 hits, 3 runs and lost Rip not only 8 points, but the game.

FL JimBoC (3-3) 303 over Runnin Bredstiks (5-1) 300

Runnin Bredstiks finally ran out of gas and FL JimBoC caught him and won 303-300 to eliminate all the undefeated teams in the league.  JimBo was down by 16 points going into Sunday night baseball.  Neil Walker contributed a 2B and a run and Allen Craig hit 2 singles, with a RBI and a run.  But Charlie Morton brought home the victory with 6 innings pitched and only gave up 1 run to put up 12 points.  For the week, JimBoC was led by Jered Weaver and his 2 W’s and 12 K’s and his 50 points.  Charlie Morton had 2 starts and totaled 35 points without the benefit of a W.  JimBoC only had 3 other players break the 20 point barrier in a balanced attack.  Of course, JimBoC had a scare with Gio Gonzalez losing 8 points on Sunday and Marcus Stroman (future Cub??) coming in relief and losing 7 points.  Bredstiks was led by Charlie Blackmon with his 3 HR’s and 7 RBI’s as he continues his great season.  Michael Brantley had 3 doubles, 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s on his way to a 33 point week. Bredstiks had 5 more players get to 20 points on the week.

Clark n Addison Tony_H (4-2) 348 over 07 Greydigger’s Crushers (3-3) 327

It came down to Sunday in a very close matchup of two 3-2 teams but getting Clayton Kershaw back led Clark n Addison Tony_H to a victory with his 45 point, 2 start week.  Clark had 6 other players reach the 20 point threshold and had no players lose them points this week.  Greydiggers was led by a trio of 30 point performers, with Madison Bumgarner getting 31 points in just one start and Alcides Escobar and Giancarlo Stanton both getting 30 points.  Chris Perez did lose Grey 9 points this week in just 2/3 of an inning of work.

Team Gramps (2-4) 250 over Team Scared Hitless (0-6) 194

Gramps finally caught a break with a below average week for him and yet he gets an easy win over Scared Hitless. Gramps has had some tough luck over the first 5 weeks, but he got the perfect matchup this week to coast to a victory.  Yu Darvish and his near no-hitter led the way with 41 points and Nolan Arenado led the offense with 30 points.   Brandon McCarthy (-7) and Grant Balfour (-2) had the only negative weeks.  Somebody please wake up Lou in the Team Scared Hitless dugout!

Balls Deep in the Ivy (1-5) 282 over CubfaninSeattle John (4-2) 254

In the upset of the week, winless Balls Deep in the Ivy defeated CubfaninSeattle John 282-254.  Ivy was led by a trio of 30 point hitters this week.  Eric Hosmer drove in 8 runs and hit 1 HR, but had 10 singles this week on his way to a 34 point week.  Daniel Murphy (33 pts.) and Carlos Gomez (32 pts.) each hit 2 HR’s on the week.   Seattle John needed a player to have a big week as his best week was 28 points by Sergio Romo out of the pen.  Seattle had 5 players reach 20 points.

Baywatch Buttspanx (3-3) 357 over Team JasonOfTheBurbs (2-4) 265

In a battle of teams trying to get back to 500, Baywatch Buttspanx pulled away on Friday and never looked back.  Baywatch was led by early season MVP, Troy Tulowitzki and his 42 points with 4 HR’s and 8 RBI’s on the week.  Baywatch also had Tommy Milone (32 pts.) and Jason Vargas (30 pts.) break the 30 point barrier along with 8 other players who exceeded 20 points.  Josh Field lost 12 points in just 2/3 of an inning.  JOTB was led by Gerardo Parra and his 30 points but had too many low performers this week, with a couple of negative outings from Jake Arrieta (-2) and Tim Lincecum (-1).

BigJonLilJon’s LehairOfTheDog (4-2) 302 over Bullpen MacGyvers (4-2) 205

Big Jon led wire to wire this week and no last minute duct tape trick was going to pull out the game for Bullpen MacGyvers.  Big Jon was led by Miguel Cabrera acting like, well Miguel Cabrera.  3 Home Runs and 10 RBI’s in one week is a sign that Miggy is back.  Other than that, Big Jon has a pretty balanced attack with only 3 other player breaking 20 points. Bullpen was led, if you can call it that, by Dee Gordon and his 23 points.  The rest was a week to write off as, I’m glad most of my players had down weeks all at once so it only cost me one win.

What’s Optimism? Vivid Reality (4-2) 326   Northside Bleacher Bums (3-3)244

What’s Optimism pulled away early in the week and coasted to an easy victory over Northside Bleacher Bums.  Optimism was led by Scott Kazmir and his 31 points in 2 starts this week.  Brandon Moss was the big bat with 30 points and Optimism had 8 more players reach 20 points.  Bleacher Bums was plagued with far too many sub-par performances with 3 pitchers losing points (Yusmeiro Petit -10, Clay Buchholz -7 and Shawn Kelley -2) and one more only getting 1 point (Chris Capuano).

The Wrong Team (3-3) 355 over Aguas de Marco Billy (4-2) 267

The Wrong Team cruised to a much needed victory this week behind Chris Young and his 45 points in 2 starts.  Wrong Team had 8 other players reach 20 points in a very balanced attack this week.  Aguas was led by Jonathan Nies with 32 points in 2 starts and had 5 other players reach 20 points.

The Calicubs (4-2) 334 over Slammin Steven Petty (0-6) 192

In another wire to wire victory, Calicubs cruised to an easy victory over Slammin Steven Petty.  Calicubs had a huge week from Max Scherzer and his 50 pts. in 2 starts.  15 k’s in 14 innings and 2 big W’s make for a great week.  But that wasn’t all, Hisashi Iwakuma (33 pts.), Fernando Rodney (31 pts.) and Tim Hudson (32 pts.) all had great pitching performances this week and Victor Martinez led the offense with 4 HR’s, 7 RBI’s on his way to 34 points.  Not much going right for Slammin as Adam Jones and his 27 points led the way.

Transaction wire has slowed down as the amount of players that can be useful is getting thin.  This week we did see Edwin Jackson get picked up.  I have to admit, I took a look at him as he has averaged 3-4 points more per start than the bulk of the starting pitchers available. But I deemed Wade Miley still better a pretty good 7th starter now that Kershaw is back on top of my rotation.

Chris Owings got picked up, along with Derek Jeter so a run on SS as we had only 11 adds this week.

Hard Luck Good Luck

Hard luck teams (Teams that should be in the Top 8 based on points)

10th 07 Greydiggers’ Crushers (3-3) is 5th in points (1826 pts.) but is just on the outside looking in to the playoffs after H2H matchup with 4th seed and 4th in pts. Clark n Addison where one of the teams was going to drop out of the playoffs with the loss.  11th seed Baywatch Buttspanx (3-3) is 8th in points  with 1773 points, and took himself one step closer to the playoffs with a victory this week over Team JasonOfTheBurbs.

Good luck teams (Currently in the playoffs, but not in the Top 8 in points)

BigJonLilJon’s LehairOfTheDog is currently in the 6th seed while he is 11th in points (1673 pts.) and  Bullpen MacGyvers is 15th in points (1614 pts.) yet holds down the final 8th seed.  Aguas de Marco Billy would be the only 4-2 team not in the Top 8 as the tiebreaker is points (1524 pts.) and he has had good luck in the wins, but bad luck if he misses the playoffs.

Notes

It also looks like everyone has figured out a way to monitor and plan out their pitching starts as I only had to adjust one score this week (Aguas de Marco Billy) for going over the 8 start limit.

One other note, the league is for public viewing.  Here are two shortcuts to take you to the league site on ESPN.
