CCO Fantasy Baseball League – Week 5

May 6, 2014 1:00 am By TheCCO 14 Comments

Runnin Bredstiks and Kentucky Ripsnorters try to stay undefeated while playing two teams trying for their first win. Sunday Night Baseball was the deciding factor in a few contests. Let’s take a closer look at the past week in the CCO FBL.

Runnin Bredstiks (5-0) defeated Balls Deep in the Ivy (0-5) 271-204 led by Jose Fernandez (53 pts.) and Johnny Cueto (32 pts.).  Kyle Farnsworth (-3) and CC Sabathia (-1) lost points for Bredstiks.

Kentucky Ripsnorters (5-0) had an easy time with Team Scared Hitless (0-5) winning 289-198. Kentucky was led by Yasiel Puig (35 pts) before he ran into the wall on Sunday and is now listed as DTD.  Rip lost points when Zack Wheeler took the mound and deducted 7 points in that outing.

We had four close games this week, let’s take a look at those games.

Aquas de Marco Billy continued his winning ways with a victory coming on Sunday night baseball when Trevor Rosenthal came on to get the save to give Aquas the win 224-222 over Whats Optimism? Vivid Reality. Sonny Gray was his top point leader (45 pts. in 2 starts) and his top hitter was Carlos Santana (32 pts). Aquas also had 3 negative pitching weeks with Cole Hamels (-7), Brett Oberholtzer (-5) and Edinson Volquez (-3). Whats Optimism? was led by Colby Rasmus (34 pts.) and also had 3 negative pitching outings with Robbie Ross (-11), Francisco Liriano (-2) and Jhoulys Chacin (-1).

Another close contest was between CubfaninSeattle John and Team JasonOfThe Burbs that came down to a Mike Trout AB late in the afternoon. Trout singled in a run, but that was not enough as CFIS won 305-301. CFIS had top performances by Justin Verlander (31 pts. in 2 starts) and 30 pts. from Jarrod Saltalamacchia and had a unsightly (-13 pts.) from Sergio Santos which resulted in Sergio being cut for Dustin McGowan who paid immediate dividends by getting 24 pts. in his Sunday start to secure the win.  JOTB had some very good pitching weeks from Ubaldo Jimenez (34 pts.) and Justin Masterson (38 pts. in 2 starts) and a poor outing from Matt Garza that cost him 5 pts. and the margin of victory.

In another game that was decided on Sunday night baseball Kevin Siegrist of the Bullpen Macgyvers showed where their team got their name as he comes on and strikes out the side and gets the W on his way to 11 pts. leading Bullpen to a 264-261 victory over Baywatch Buttspanx. Baywatch was in this position after Jason Vargas gave up 7 runs in 5 innings earlier in the day to lose 8 pts. Baywatch was led by Troy Tulowitzki and his 43 pts. and had pitchers John Lackey (35 pts. in 2 starts) and C.J. Wilson (33 pts.) lead the rotation. To go along with Vargas (-3 in 2 starts) Tommy Milone (-4) lost points for him as well. Bullpen was more balanced and was led by Dee Gordon (30 pts.), but also lost points with Collin McHugh (-2) and Tyler Thornburgh (-4).

Top team of the week and largest margin of victory was The Calicubs (3-2) with their victory over FL JimBoC (2-3) 381-268.  In a very balanced attack, Calicubs best player was Tim Hudson with 29 pts.  He had 10 players reach the 20 pt. threshold.

One trade this week, Runnin Bredstiks picked up Scooter Gennett then traded him for Jonathan Villar with 07 Greydigger’s Crushers. Ironically, in another league I am in, someone dropped Scooter Gennett to pick up Jonathan Villar this week as well. This is the league’s fifth trade of the season but only the second without What’s Optimism? Vivid Reality.

32 players were added this week and 34 players were dropped, with the most common theme being prospect that isn’t working out or can’t wait on or aging vet just not cutting it and vice versa for the adds.

Hard Luck Good Luck

Hard luck teams (Teams that should be in the Top 8 based on points)

9th Whats Optimsm? Vivid Reality is 7th in points (1472 pts.) but is just on the outside looking in to the playoffs.  But the biggest hard luck team is Team Gramps. He is 1-4 even though he is 8th in points (1471 pts) Hang in their Gramps!

He is in the Top 8 but currently only sixth even though he is leading the league in points. Calicubs (1615 pts)

Good luck teams (Currently in the playoffs, but not in the Top 8 in points)

Aquas de Marco Billy is currently in the 5 seed even though he is 17th in points (1249 pts.) and only ahead of what looks like teams with Lou Piniella sleeping in the dugout as managers. He keeps getting the W’s though. Bullpen MacGyvers is 11th in points (1409 pts.) yet holds down the 4 seed.

One other note, the league is now for public viewing. Here are two shortcuts to take you to the league site on ESPN.
