Kris Bryant had a pretty good game against the Birmingham Barons (White Sox) on Wednesday night. Bryant went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and a walk. Bryant drove in six runs and scored four times. The Smokies beat up the Barons 12-1 in a game Arodys Vizcaino made is Double-A debut with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.
Kris Bryant recorded the first multi-homer game of his career and became the first Smokie to hit two home runs in a single game since Javier Baez last August (Aug. 21, 2013) in Birmingham.
Bryant is hitting .313/.428/.600 with nine doubles and eight home runs in 32 games with a 1.028 OPS. Bryant has walked 19 times with 38 strikeouts, but over his last 10 games, Bryant has walked five times with 13 strikeouts.
For the season, Bryant is hitting .261/.414/.435 with a double and a home run against southpaws and .326/.431/.641 with eight doubles and seven home runs against right-handed pitching.
The Smokies activated OF Jorge Soler from the 7-day disabled list on Wednesday. Soler was in Wednesday’s starting lineup but he did not arrive to the park on time from the airport. Soler has been on the disabled list since the first game of the season following a double in his first at bat.
Jorge Soler hit .281/.343/.467 with 13 doubles, one triple and eight home runs in 55 games for the D-Cubs last year.
This is an important season for Jorge Soler. The Cubs need for him to stay healthy for the rest of the year … and start putting check marks on his player development plan.
Rob Zastryzny took a line drive off his left forearm during Wednesday night’s game. Zastryzny left the game and reports during the game indicated he was holding his left wrist.
Sean Kernan reported Zastryzny “took a wicked line drive” on his left arm that could sideline the Cubs’ second round pick in last June’s draft. According to the report, after Zastryzny completed the play on the liner that hit him, Zastryzny collapsed to a knee “in obvious pain.” Zastryzny was taken to a local hospital for X-Rays.
Dave Keller said he was hit in the back of the forearm and the team would know more about his injury on Thursday.
