From the Wire: Cubs Place Ruggiano on DL, Recall Ramirez and Rosscup, Option Parker to Iowa

April 24, 2014 10:12 am By Neil 29 Comments

The Cubs roster shuffle continued on Thursday morning. As expected, Justin Ruggiano was placed on the 15-day DL with a left hamstring tear. Instead of calling up a position player to take his spot on the 25-man roster, the Cubs have decided to have a 13-man pitching staff for a while.

The Cubs recalled RHP Neil Ramirez and LHP Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs were able to recall Rosscup before the mandatory 10 days due to the new rules for doubleheaders in which teams can add a 26th man to the roster.

To clear another spot on the active roster, the Cubs optioned RHP Blake Parker to Triple-A Iowa.

Justin Ruggiano has a Grade 2 tear of his left hamstring. Ruggiano told the beat writers that best case scenario for him would to be back in three to four weeks. That is an optimistic timeframe for his return based on the severity of the injury. Ruggiano told ESPN Chicago that he felt the injury before he fell to the ground near the bullpen mound.
