According to multiple reports, the Cubs placed RHP Jose Veras on the 15-day DL on Saturday with a left oblique strain retroactive to Friday. RHP Brian Schlitter was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take Veras’ spot on the active roster.
Jose Veras has struggled from day one of Spring Training and less than 24 hours after his manager said he was day-to-day with a sore left oblique, the veteran reliever has been placed on the disabled list.
Veras has pitched in six games for the Cubs this season and allowed 10 runs, all earned, on six hits with three HBP, 10 walks and five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings (15.88 ERA, 2.82 WHIP).
Brian Schlitter has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa after making the Opening Day roster out of Spring Training. Schlitter appeared in six games prior to his demotion on April 12. Schlitter allowed four runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings (6.35 ERA, 0.88 WHIP). Schlitter appeared in four games out of the I-Cubs’ pen and allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in five innings (3.60 ERA, 1.60 WHIP).
The Cubs plan on carrying an eight-man bullpen for the foreseeable future. Brian Schlitter will join Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Neil Ramirez, Zac Rosscup, James Russell, Wesley Wright and Justin Grimm in the pen until the Cubs activate Jake Arrieta from the disabled list and move Carlos Villanueva to the bullpen.
