Spring Training Game Thirteen: Cubs (6-6) vs. Rockies (6-7)

  • Game Time – 3:05pm CDT
  • Coverage – TV: None – Radio: Cubs.com
  • Location – Cubs Park, Mesa

Travis Wood (0-0, 0.00, 0.33) vs. Jorge De La Rosa (1-0, 9.64, 2.14)

The Cubs return to their home park and put their four-day spring winning streak on the line this afternoon against the Rockies. Colorado beat the Cubs last Wednesday in Mesa and the two teams square off one more time in the Cactus League (March 19 in Scottsdale) before meeting up for a pair of series (seven games) during the regular season.

Rick Renteria has not announced whether Jeff Samardzija or Travis Wood will get the honor of starting on Opening Day in Pittsburgh. Jeff Samardzija is thought of as the number one pitcher on the Cubs’ staff while Travis Wood is coming off a better season. Both starters are lining up to pitch the first game of the season. Renteria said last week he would wait until at least the middle of the month before announcing who will get the ball on Opening Day.

This afternoon all begins with Travis Wood …

Travis Wood makes his second Cactus League start today. Wood’s first spring start was pushed to a simulated game due to rain in the Phoenix area. Wood started last Thursday in Goodyear and kept the Indians off the board for three innings. Wood was so efficient he had to finish getting his pitch count up in the bullpen after he was lifted from the game. Wood surrendered only one hit, no walks and struck out three batters.

Four innings should be the target for Travis Wood this afternoon.

Jorge De La Rosa makes his third Cactus League start this afternoon. De La Rosa has allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts over his first two outings of the spring (4 2/3 innings). De La Rosa allowed one run on three hits with a walk to the Angels last Friday.

Jorge De La Rosa will likely get the ball on Opening Day for the Rockies.
