James McDonald (0-0, 18.00, 2.33) vs. Randy Wolf (0-0, 7.20, 1.40)
The Cubs make the long trip from Mesa to Peoria tonight to take on the Seattle Mariners. The Cubs had six night games on their Cactus League schedule at the beginning of the spring. But that was before rain cancelled the first game under the lights in Scottsdale nearly two weeks ago.
Tonight’s game ends the first half of the Cubs’ Cactus League schedule. Thursday is the team’s lone day off of the spring. Friday begins a stretch of 20 games in 16 days to wrap up Spring Training with six of the 20 games being played Saturday through Monday.
And tonight it all begins with James McDonald …
James McDonald makes his third appearance of the spring in a Cactus League game. McDonald has faced the Angels twice, both times in Tempe, but with much different results. McDonald was hammered on Feb. 28 and tossed two innings of shutout ball against pretty much the same lineup a week later. McDonald is battling for a spot in the Cubs’ rotation and has allowed six runs on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts in three innings (two games, one start). The Angels also hit two home runs against him in his first appearance.
James Russell, Tsuyoshi Wada and Dallas Beeler are also on the pitching schedule for tonight’s game.
Rick Renteria posted the following lineup for tonight’s game:
- Emilio Bonifacio – 2B
- Junior Lake – CF
- Casper Wells – RF
- Mike Olt – DH
- Javier Baez – SS
- Ryan Kalish – LF
- Chris Valaika – 1B
- Christian Villanueva – 3B
- John Baker – C
Randy Wolf is trying to pitch his way onto the Mariners’ rotation and turn a minor league contract into a big league deal. Wolf had Tommy John surgery last year and is attempting another comeback. Wolf makes his third spring start tonight after allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings (two starts).
