Cubs Reassign Javier Baez to Minor League Camp, Seven Players Cut from Spring Roster

March 22, 2014 11:49 am By Neil 33 Comments

The Cubs announced the sixth round of spring roster cuts on Saturday morning. Javier Baez, as expected, was reassigned to minor league camp. Baez will begin the season as Iowa’s shortstop. If Baez continues to check boxes off his player development card, Baez will make his big league debut at some point during the upcoming season, likely in June after he passes the Super Two date.

The Cubs optioned RHP Blake Parker to Triple-A Iowa and reassigned non-roster invitees Chris Valaika, Jonathan Sanchez, Brian Schlitter, Casper Wells and Chang-Yong Lim to minor league camp.

With the seven moves the Cubs announced Saturday, the Cubs spring roster officially stands at 37 players.

Javier Baez hit .310/.310/.738/1.048 in 14 Cactus League games with three doubles and five home runs. Baez played two games at second bases while providing several of the big league team’s highlights this spring. This move should not come as a surprise, the front office has been very transparent about their plans for Javier Baez.
