Spring Training Game Two: Cubs (0-1) vs. Angels (0-0)

  • Game Time – 2:05pm CST
  • Coverage – TV: MLB.TV – Radio: 720 WGN
  • Location – Tempe Diablo Stadium, Tempe

Chris Rusin (0-0, -.–, -.–) vs. Jered Weaver (0-0, -.–, -.–)

Cactus League play for the Cubs resumes this afternoon in Tempe against the Los Angeles Angels. Chris Rusin takes the hill for Rick Renteria as he tries to pitch his way onto the Cubs starting rotation.

The Cubs had an uneven game Thursday against a good Diamondbacks squad. Rick Renteria is running out a lineup this afternoon that features Javier Baez, Chris Coghlan, Ryan Sweeney and Darwin Barney. And on the pitching side, the Angels are scheduled to see a lot of lefties this afternoon after Rusin.

Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer will call today’s game on 720 WGN and the Angels’ broadcast can be seen on MLB.TV.

This afternoon all starts with Chris Rusin …

Chris Rusin pitched well over his first nine starts for the Cubs last season after he was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Rusin allowed 15 runs on 45 hits in 49 1/3 innings with 29 strikeouts and 19 walks in those nine starts. Rusin struggled in September to the tune of a 7.41 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in his last four outings of the year. Rusin ended up with a 2-6 record in 13 starts for the Cubs last season with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP (2-2 in seven road starts with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP).

Chris Rusin nearly made the Opening Day roster a year ago with a sensational spring. And he will try once again to make the front office think about sending him to Triple-A to start the upcoming season.

James McDonald is scheduled to follow Rusin this afternoon. McDonald is competing with Rusin and Carlos Villanueva for a spot in the rotation.

Zac Rosscup, Jonathan Sanchez and Tommy Hottovy are also on the pitching schedule for today.

The Angels begin their spring this afternoon determined to avoid the slow starts that have plagued them the past two years. The Angels have a lot of talent and the best player in the game on their roster but injuries and poor performances have kept them from meeting expectations the past two seasons.

Jered Weaver takes the hill for Mike Scioscia today and he is scheduled to pitch three innings. Weaver will face the following starting lineup:

  1. Chris Coghlan – DH
  2. Darwin Barney – 2B
  3. Ryan Sweeney – CF
  4. Nate Schierholtz – RF
  5. Donnie Murphy – 3B
  6. Casper Wells – LF
  7. Javier Baez – SS
  8. George Kottaras – C
  9. Chris Valaika – 1B

John Baker, Rafael Lopez, Logan Watkins, Ryan Kalish, Brett Jackson, Ryan Roberts, Arismendy Alcantara, Mike Olt, Jeudy Valdez, Josh Vitters, Christian Villanueva, Aaron Cunningham, Jorge Soler, Matt Szczur, Kris Bryant and Albert Almora are scheduled to be on the short trip from Mesa to Tempe.
