From the Wire … Cubs Call-Up LHP Zac Rosscup, DFA Dave Sappelt

September 3, 2013 3:19 pm By Neil 8 Comments

According to multiple reports, the Cubs selected the contract of LHP Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa, and added him to both the 40-man roster and active roster on Tuesday afternoon.

Dave Sappelt was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Rosscup.

The Cubs also recalled catcher J.C. Boscan, RHP Justin Grimm and LHP Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa as part of the September call-ups. The Cubs active roster currently stands at 32 players.

The Cubs acquired LHP Zac Rosscup from the Tampa Bay Rays in the Matt Garza deal in January of 2011. Rosscup has put together a very good year and is a viable option for a second lefty reliever next season. Rosscup was 2-2 in 46 games with Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa this season with a 2.12 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. In 51 innings this year between the two levels, Rosscup struck out 83, walked 25 and gave up 36 hits.
